What was the atmosphere in the theater like? Did people yelp, jump out of their seats, cover their eyes?

I don't recall much of a reaction from the audience except the occasional jumping in their seats. Then again, it was dark and I was looking through my fingers.

The biggest scream from the audience was for the glass hitting the wall; for some reason no-one expected that. The shattered mirror came in second. For the most part the audience sat quite silent during the film, eyes glued to the screen. There was no tweeting, no celphones, and not too many kids. A simpler time.
shareI saw it in a theatre in 1980, but I don't recall a crowd reaction. In fact I don't think there was much of a crowd. This was hardly a big hit. As for my reaction, it was pretty lukewarm. There isn't one scary bit in this movie. The reaction I've read here baffles me.

I saw it when I was 6 at the Bay Theater in Seattle, lots of jumps and screams.
