I'm very surprised about this rating. To me, there's not enough content to justify it. I'd think at most it would be PG-13, especially being from 1980.

On IMDb's Parent's Guide for this movie, it seems like the raw death scenes are the most toughest content for some. They do sound fairly graphic.

Well, that rating didn’t exist yet so it’s probably why they slapped it with a R rating.
