the last dream sequence, where eddies wife is trying to save him in the water… that whole whole 5 minute dream sequence was almost exactly like the stargate sequence in 2001. anyone else notice this?

I noticed this. I think it's because they used macro-photography, as seen in 2001 and the credits sequence of Superman (1978). I think they also used it in The Fountain. I love this kind of SFX, and hate CGI, but that's just me. They seemed to have shot cells and bacteria on a very high frame rate and at a high magnification. Creates a wonderful effect.

I can't help thinking what Kubrick could have done with the original novel/script. It would have been unbelievable had that happened.
