No.

If you're serious, you lose.

I thought about this recently, too! Out of nowhere... I started thinking about the likelihood of an Altered States remake.

While I think the original film is somewhat flawed, I seriously doubt some Hollywood-type could make it any better.

However, I think someone like Aronofsky, Nolan, or Proyas could enhance the visual effects without losing the intelligence and intensity of the original.

With the right director, a remake could work.

Hm, the visuals are obviously the strongest part of the piece, no fixing needed there... But, I must say I´ve thought about how would it have come out if Cronenberg had directed it since Russell really sometimes seemed to run into trouble with handling the scientific, philosophical aspects which tend to come off silly on occasion. And, while Cronenberg also isn´t a stranger to absurdism, he - unlike Russell - seems completely aware of it. He´s a lot funnier, actually.

But, as Russell is visually the stronger of the two, maybe the should´ve co-directed it... Something like that would never happen, of course, but it´s an interesting idea to entertain nevertheless.
