It was hard to tell under all that hair if that was William Hurt running from the dogs and climbing buildings, but whoever it was was in tremendous shape!
Was it William as the ape, or a stuntman? And did he wear a suit or just have hair glued all over his body?

I don't think it was a suit because it is anatomically correct and most of the times when it is shot from the back and he bends over I can see balls
shareThe credits list Miguel Godreau as 'Primal Man', who was a dancer who was reportedly 'small' (I couldn't find a wikipedia page for him and his IMDb page is sparse, but did find an obituary with some info). I am pretty sure he played the creature we saw. Unless some really good force perspective shots were achieved, it couldn't have been Hurt because the creature was noticeably smaller than the humans he interacted with.
