The Indians only did the drugs in the straight-from-the-pot form and while they sat in their ceremonial cave. Eddie went and injected the potion directly, bypassing the digetive tract and its possible alterations, then went into the isolarion chamber. So he took a direct dose, removed any outside interference, and thus was able to indulge in recreational mutation.

As he went further into the experiment, his self-mutating powers moved from internal to externakl effects. Thus when his wife made contact when his power was peaking, she got caught up the field effect and was mutated to a form that appeared to be self-incinerating. The recognition of his wife's imminent demise shocked Eddie back to reality and he was able to focus his powers to rebuild, then restore both of them to normalcy.

You killed the lizard and then went outside

eddie didnt inject the drug he just drank it. arthur told mason that eddie drinks it in the scene that mason saw him under the influence of the drug for the first time while eddie was in the white box thing right before eddie showed mason and arthur the isolation tank

Injecting Aminita Muscaria (the 'shroom in the movie) would kill you. He ate them

reply

Definitly not Aminita muscaria used in the movie. Not a real mushroom at all, the only drug capable of inducing effects like those used in the movie would be DMT or maybe salvia.

Amanita muscaria is hardly even considered a psychadelic, it sometimes produces visuals but mostly gives users a long very odd trip that can be unpredictable but never that visual or disorienting

reply

I don't think at all that you are right with saying that the only drug capable of such visual effects would be DMT or Salvia.
"Magic" Mushrooms (I'm not sure about Amanita though, that's an exception) can be VERY visual and their visual effects come extremely close to what you see in this movie.

I'm not sure myself if he injected or not, but, regardless of that issue, it seems to me that Eddie had tapped into his unconscious self, and at that place the chaos in his mind caused his holographic projection of himself to change from it's normal, everyday state. In his case his obsession to learn the original, primal nature of consciousness caused him to connect to his pridorial self (yet another holographic projection, but older in linear time). It seems to me that Eddie's projection had become too chaotic (because of the terror at percieving the 'void'?) and thus his strange shape at the end of the film. His wife's change is because she too is believing in what is happening. Thus it becomes real for her. He managed to fight back to normality, because he cared for her. This scene reveals so much about the nature of mind over matter, as well as the living paradox of our human nature.

Who's to say that the Indians didn't/don't have crazy-ass
life-changing experiences on mushrooms?
After all, they are important rituals held at religious ceremonies.
Not at the weekend chili cook off.

reply

Because the Indians were not seeking the "great truth" that Eddie was seeking. Eddie's odyssey is a manifestation of his hubris.

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

reply

David,
Eddie did not directly inject the potion, BUT some of his blood and no one elses was added to it.

Only two things are actually knowable:
It is now and you are here. All else is merely a belief.

Yeah it´s probably the most bizarre Love Conquers All story I´ve ever seen.

Bit disappointing ending, yes.
