Haha great idea!x But I wonder how long it will last before we need yet another one!x Hehe!x

I think putting Sir Arnold in your story would be great - I have a bit of a soft spot for Arnold actually, I think he's funny! I agree with you about how its great that he's the only person who Humphrey is afraid off! He's going to appear in my stories too, but probably nit until after the end of this one!

Talking about the end of the Chemical Crisis, I am working on it as I speak! I'm a bit old fashioned cos i like to write everything down with pen and paper before I type it up, so bear with me and there will be some updates soon!x

I'm still waiting for Victoria and Albert to arrive, I hope it comes soon!

Hope your having fun!x

Yay! Your writer's block has disappeared then? Can't wait until I can read it! I hadn't been able to watch any Yes Minister since Sunday because my cousin was staying over (which was so much fun...we always have a movie-marathon ), so I have been watching some episodes today...I think I'm seriously addicted... Anyway, I have been working on my fanfic yesterday and today as well...I added another chapter/scene to Press and Prejudice again this morning...the one with Arnold in it! It'll probably be visible by tomorrow... And I'm working on the next scene as well...it's almost finished...but now I'm a bit stuck... Well, it'll come to me.

Yes, we'll probably need a new thread again in two days time , but at least we've got some space again... Wow, that other thread was becoming rather long... (And it was only the two of us talking... ) It's so funny...when I'm watching YM, my dad keeps walking past, going "Ahhh that guy is SO annoying!" (meaning Humphrey, of course) Which is just another sign of the brilliant job Nigel Hawthorne did, portraying Humphrey Appleby...he's so annoying you sometimes just want to hit him, but you can't because he's annoying in such a subtle way, which makes it even more annoying... I've got a bit of a soft spot for Humphrey, though...he can be very mean, but you can sort of see in his eyes that he is not completely evil... Bernard's just too sweet for words, and Jim is sometimes too dumb for words...I especially like it when he gets drunk, like in Party Games when he tries to say "Department of Administrative Affairs" but he can't because he's too drunk and ends up just saying "DAA"...

Yay!x I shall read as soon as I've finished posting! Then I shall try to finish The Chemical Crisis!x Actually in the next chapter of it, you will see that its plainly been "borrowed" *ahem* from the Official Visit where everyone crowds into Jim's compartment on the train! I love that scene and I just had to fit something similar in somewhere!x

I think I'm addicted to watching Yes Minister too, I watched the Offical Visit three times in a row yesterday after I'd finished work!

I like your analysis of Humphrey's annoyingness (is that a word?)! Its true, sometimes you do you want to grab him by the shoulders and shout "For God's sake speak plain English!!!" But thats part of the greatness of the character, and of course, Nigel's acting! And its true, you know that he's not really nasty or anything, its just he's been working in this environment since he was in his early 20's! Sometimes I think Bernard should stand up for himself a little more, but then when you think of it, he couldn't really as he couldn't upset Jim cos he would get rid of him as his Private Secretary and he couldn't upset Humphrey or he would get sent to the Vehicle Licensing Centre in Swansea (that is actually where it is!) and his career as a Civil Servant would be in ruins! Poor thing! And Jim isn't really stupid, he's just easily dominated and like most politicians, doesn't want to be seen to look bad in public!

Now, time to read your very brilliant fic!x

Oh my gosh! Press and Prejudice is totally fantastic! I loved the last two chapters! The line about "principles" being a new brand of whisky was brilliant - I'm sure if Anthony Jay or Jonathon Lynn read it, they'd be kicking themselves that they never used something like that in a episode! In fact same goes for the whole story!

Thanks for the dedication at the end - I've gone all red and giggly now hehe!x

I'm going back to read it again and then get on with mine!x

reply

I'm SO glad you liked it! The principles thing just came to me when I was posting on this board about how I love it when Jim gets drunk in YM...and I thought I'd just put a little reference to that in my story... I'd probably die of the honour it would be if Anthony Jay or Jonathan Lynn read my story, let alone if they would be jealous of what I wrote... But I'm really glad you like it...because sometimes fanfic can really ruin the whole idea of a comedy, and I'm happy that that isn't what I did. About the dedication...you're welcome!

Ohhh the train scene from The Official Visit! I love that scene too! I have seen all three YM series twice now, and the second time I watched that episode I looked at what Bernard was doing more closely during that scene...it was hilarious!!! He's sort of being squashed more and more by all the people that come in and he looks as if he's almost bursting with laughter and at one point I believe someone pushes him over and he sort of hits the wall and slides down or something... (It must have been so much fun working on that series...)

No, ok, Jim isn't really stupid, he wouldn't have become a minister if he was (or would he? ) But he's just confused all the time because of the way Humphrey and Bernard talk, and because of all those documents and the way things work (for example the thing with the 'explanatory note') . But he's not stupid. I take that back.

I was in Amsterdam today and I went to a great seminar about the history of film and cinema... But...I also bought The Complete Yes Minister (It's a bit like YM episodes in story form, isn't it?) and also Nigel Hawthorne's autobiography Straight Face (do you have it?). I don't think I'll get round to reading them soon, what with all the school work coming up, but I'm sure I'll read little bits now and then... Anyway, I'm going to read your new chapter now! Yay!

I just read it and reviewed! Bernard and Hen...when I read it I keep forgetting Hen isn't really a character in the series, but she fits in so well... Just a little question here, this might be interesting...who do you think should play Hen if she really were a character in YM? I think Kate Winslet might be good for the part...of course she wasn't the right age in the 1980s, but that doesn't matter, it's just for fun anyway... I really like her as an actress...I think she's very pretty in a classic, subtle sort of way...and she seems very sweet...a good combination with Bernard, I think. Can you come up with any others?

reply

You've bought the Complete Yes Minister book? Oh goody! Its excellent! Yeah I have Straight Face, but everytime I go to read it I burst into tears. Its so touching and at the same time very funny! It has a really odd effect on me! The final chapter is written by Nigel's boyfriend after Nigel died and I cried for ages after reading it!

I've re-read Press and Prejudice and I loved the bit where if Gulliver did actually go public about it being him who made the press leak, then it would expose the civil service as all being liars. It was really funny! Its weird, I've often thought about what the writers would think if they knew people were writng fanfiction! But like you, I'd die if either of them read it! But honestly, and I saw it with your Blackadder stories too, you seem to have tapped into the mindset of the writers! Hehe!x

Thanks for reading and reviewing chapter 5. (It says chapter 6, but that the first one was an author's note!) I was so happy when you said that you keep forgetting that Hen isn't a real YM character... I think thats the best compliament ever!!! I desperately wanted her to fit in, but I always fear that she will upset the balance between Jim, Humphrey and Bernard.

As to who I'd like to play her... honestly I've no idea, I've never really thought about it. She is based on people I know with a bit of my own personality thrown in, so thinking of someone who could play her is weird. Kate Winslet would probably be high in my choices cos I love her, but like you said, she's way to young to have been around to play her in the eighties. I imagine Hen as being 23 going in 24 in 1984 when I've set the Departmental Affair and The Chemical Crisis. In fact I've even given her my friend Laura's birthday, 1st of November! So it would probably have to be an actress who was around that age at the time!

Incidentally, I've planned a whole series, God knows when I'll get them all written, but I plan to skip time for the next one, then set the next one during Yes Prime Minister and I've chosen July 1987 for Hen and Bernard to get married! I've got big plans for the wedding story... Should be fun!x

I know what you mean...Straight Face is very touching... I actually read that last bit Trevor Bentham wrote on the train back home. It made me all melancholy... Books don't actually make me cry, just very sad...but there are some films and songs I can't listen or watch without crying...but that bit about how Nigel Hawthorne died, or how Trevor Bentham put it "ceased to live" (that's such a beautiful way of saying it, I think), was so touching. (I guess the other people on the train wondered what the hell I was reading, because I'm sure I looked miserable... ) I also read the bit he wrote about Yes Minister, and how Paul Eddington sort of thought Nigel and Derek weren't very good actors (but still he didn't write anything really unkind about him) and how Derek Fowlds is also a very sweet person in real life (very much like Bernard probably, only less fussy about language).

I just watched Open Government and The Official Visit again...gosh it's brilliant. "Welcome to the standing committee." Just seeing Humphrey in his pyjamas is hilarious...it doesn't go with his character, just like the "Good God, what's the crisis?!" moment when Jim calls him in the middle of the night...

Tapped into the mindset of the writers? Thanks so much... The thing is, I think of a situation and then I just imagine what the characters would say...so it's actually them doing the work! It's so much more difficult to write a story with your own characters and setting...that's why I thik you've done such a great job with Hen. I mean, you created her and you couldn't really draw from the series itself while writing her...of course you had the YM setting to put her in, but still I think it's clever how you got her to fit in so well... I had expected you had based her on yourself a bit...don't know why...maybe because I often imagine while watching comedies and films what it would be like if I just walked in!

Wow, a whole series of stories, that's SO cool! And they're going to get married eventually?! I'm looking forward to it...but I also like the way they are together now...still a bit shy and everything...very sweet. But I'd love to read about them getting married and maybe having little Bernards and Hens... I can imagine a great scene with Hen and Bernard bringing the baby to the office and Humphrey stumbling over toys and bottles! Sorry I'm getting carried away, I'll leave you to it. I'll write another YM fic soon, I hope...I just have to get an idea for the story... (I'm really going to stop writing this post now...it's getting addictive. )

I haven't read the Yes Minister bit in Straight Face yet... I'm saving it for when I have time! I did glance at the bit where he says that he didn't really know Paul or Derek, but he remembered Derek as being Mr Derek from Basil Brush. That really made me laugh!x I read the chapter by Trevor on the bus home and unlike you, I did actually cry. Luckily I was sitting at the back of the bus and it wasn't busy! And even luckier that I'd bought a new packet of tissues!x

The bit that disappoints me about the Offical Visit is Humphrey's dressing gown. If the book you will read that his dressing gown is a really flashy affair - a Chinese kimono-style thing with a dragon printed on it. I read this bit before seeing the episode and it was sort of disappointing, as I really wanted to see how he looked in a dressng gown like that! But I do love his purple pyjamas though!xxx Its so funny!

I quite like Bernard and Hen the way the are now too - at the beginning of a relationship and being all shy and stuff, but I thought it would be fun to put a wedding into a Yes Minister episode. (Well Yes Prime Minister actually) I mean there are so many things that can go wrong! Anything could happen! Its interesting you should mention them having kids cos I did think about it! There are lots of things that could be invented to go wrong there too!

I watched Party Games last night, I love that episode so much! The EuroSausage just cracks me up everytime I watch it! Its Jim's speech about it - he get all nationalistic and patriotic and all over a sausage! One of the best bits is when Humphrey and Arnold are having lunch and they are trying to come up with a suitable candidate for the next Prime Minister and they suddenly realise that they have just described Jim and they burst out laughing - its so funny! Then when Bernard joins them and can't believe that they are suggesting Jim for PM. "The Minister... Mr Hacker... Prime Minister?" Then he checks his watch to see if its not an April Fool's joke! I think its brilliant! But the final scene when the phone rings with the result and Jim can't even say a proper sentence "Is it..." and he points to himself and Humphrey just smiles and says "Yes Prime Minister!" I just love it!

Luv Claire!x
Britain's future Prime Minister

reply

I can actually imagine you cried when you read that bit...I probably would have cried if I had been in a more depressed mood...

Oh, the EuroSausage...what did they want to call the British sausage at first? The high fat offal tube or something...ewww. I love it when Jim reads something about the content of the sausage being bits of meat steamed of the carcass and then he feels all sick because he's just had one for breakfast... Funny thing, having sausages for breakfast...we don't do that here, although I'm sure I could eat anything at breakfast...

Ohhh, yes, that "Yes...Prime Minister!" moment...I love it too... And when he asks Bernard to stay on as his Personal Private Secretary and Bernard goes... "Oh...gosh." It's so sweet! (Humphrey is a bit mean there, though, because he makes it clear he doesn't really like Bernard to stay on. ) I think I'll watch at least one other episode this evening...

You can imagine me crying... Well I am a bit of a softie really! And I do love Nigel Hawthorne a lot!x

Actually talking about him, I watched some of Victoria and Albert and the scene where he gives Queen Victoria away at her wedding as he gets all emotional - its just too sweet for words! But the really mad thing is I've had something similar planned for Hen and Bernard's wedding! I plan to have Humphrey give Hen away (her dad having died a few years before) and then in total contrast to what he's usually like, he sheds a few tears when the happy couple say "I do"!!!

The sausages for breakfast thing comes as part of the traditional British breakfast. This consists of sausage, bacon, a fried egg, mushrooms, fried tomatoes, baked beans, fried bread or toast and a cup of tea! I personally have no idea how anyone could eat that first thing in the morning, but then I have no idea how anyone can eat anything in the morning! However at a about 11 o'clock on a Sunday morning, this is great! I was in Germany once and for breakfast they have different kinds of meat and cheese and stuff - I couldn't eat a thing, not at that time of the morning! Its so odd!

The Emulsified High-Fat Offal Tube... sounds absolutely disgusting, and I would have no hesitation in changing the ingredients!

You do get the impression that Humphrey isn't keen for Jim to keep Bernard on as his Principle Private Secretary at Number 10. It makes it even mor clear in the book actually! But Party Games is in the second book which is rather annoying! I'm going to have to do without watching Yes Minister for a few days, I'm moving into a new flat for going back to university on Sunday, so I've packed up most of my DVDs and stuff. Mind you, I'll probably dig them out again, cos I can't resist!x

Nigel Hawthorne is great...he seems so nice (from what I've read about him) and he probably would have made a great father (he wasn't one, of course, but I can imagine him being a very sweet father and grandfather). You can just see in his eyes that he was very sweet...

Victoria and Albert is wonderful...there is another scene, in fact I believe it is Nigel's last scene in V&A, and he also cries there...it's probably the best scene in the whole thing.

I know about the breakfast thing, yes... It's rather stupid, I'm studying English language and culture and I've never been to Britain... I REALLY want to go soon, but I haven't really got the money... *argh* I need a job. And when I'm there, I'll try the traditional British breakfast, including the emulsified high-fat offal tube... In Holland we also have this kind of sausage that's said to be nothing but fat and little waste bits of meat... However, it's very tasty... Anyway, you're from Scotland: what about haggis? Have you ever eaten it? The description sounds disgusting, but you never know...

~~~~~~~~~~
Tsja...schrijven is gevaarlijk. ~ Sindala
reply
Yeah I eat haggis! Its actually very nice, its no worse than eating sausages and bacon and stuff! Its good if eaten the traditional way with mashed potato and mashed turnips - yum! We don't have it often, but it is nice for a change!
I hope you can get to come to Britain sometime soon - you could visit the Houses of Parliament and see the real Jim Hackers and Sir Humphreys! Hehe!x I'm sure will enjoy the Full English (another name for the traditional breakfast, but you probably know that!) complete with emulsified high-fat offal tube AKA the British sausage! Hehe!x
I've done it - I've dug out series two from my neatly packed box and watched the episode where Jim and Humphrey have to appear before the parliamentary committee - I love that episode!
Luv Claire!x
Britain's future Prime Minister
reply
I didn't expect you to wait until after Sunday to watch YM again... I'd do the same...it's just so addictive... Is that the episode where Jim keeps telling the committee they have to ask Humphrey and Humphrey says hey have to ask Jim? And doesn't Humphrey have this very complicated line about administration and government policy that gets the woman who asks the questions completely confused? That's probably Humphrey at his best!
Haggis, so it's not as disgusting as it sounds... I'd love to try it sometime... When I'm in Britain, I'll eat haggis as well as the emulsified high-fat offal tube (I love that description). I actually have a book with traditional English recipes...I already made some of them, Shepherd's Pie for instance, which is really good. I also made this Scottish kind of soup which has chicken, beef and prunes in it...that was a bit weird, but okay...
I'm watching all kinds of old bits of film for one of my courses at the moment...even things from the 1890s! And one of the fragments was footage of...the Houses of Parliament! It was very funny, because I was watching all those little clips and suddenly I saw this Yes Minister image...
By the way, yesterday we had this really boring introduction to one of the courses...we were sitting there and our professor was going on for ages about something very boring we already knew about...so I showed my friend, who was sitting next to me, my YM fanfic...and she read it...and afterwards she went "You do know you are mad, don't you?" I found out she rather likes YM too, but not as much as we do, and she liked the fic, but I think she was wondering how someone could actually want to write fanfic about it... She'll never understand. By the way, I was taking my dog for a walk this afternoon, when I came up with a rather nice idea for a new YM fic...it involves Humphrey in a track suit... (If you can get Humphrey into some silly clothes, you already have a marvellous episode...) I hope I'll get round to writing it soon...
Humphrey in a tracksuit - oh no... don't torture the poor man!x Hehe!x I've got a bit planned for one of my later stories in which he's in tennis gear! I kinda stole the idea from the pic of Nigel in tennis gear in his autobiography! Hehe!x Its going to be mad - it starts with Hen, Bernard, Humphrey, his wife (who I've called Alexandra or Alex for short cos we are never told anything about her) and Hen's mum (who I've called Catherine) are at a garden party at Sir Arnold's house and he announces that they are going to have a tennis tounament in two weeks time (as they do every year)! And every year Hen gets matched with Humphrey and he wins almost in straight sets every year!
Chicken, beef and prunes? I've never heard of that one before. Sounds interesting! Shepherd's Pie is nice! I like that! And funnily enough, Shepherd happens to be my surname! Hehe!x
So your friend thinks you're mad for writing Yes Minister stories - so does my friend Laura actually, but I still force her to read them all the time! Hehe! She's the one who is mentioned at the end of all of my chapters, mostly because, I've tortured her into reading them before I put them online! Hehe!x
I'm going to start referring to sausgaes as emulsified high-fat offal tubes all the time now, and people are going to think I'm crazy! But it'll probably just slip out! Hehe! Mad!x
In the episode we were talking about, the woman who has had to listen to Humphrey's very long, compliacated, so-called explanation, she looks so confused and says "Well thats just a load of meaningless drivil." Then she's not so sure cos she didn't actually understand anything of what he had just said she says "Isn't it!" I love that! Its just brilliant! And then the chair if the committee says "When does this end?", meaning the whole batting the blame between politicians and Civil Servants, but Humphrey (very deliberatly takes it to mean the meeting) says "As soon as you like!" I'm always totally in stitches!x
God Yes Minister rocks!x
reply
Ahhh Shepherd is your surname...so it isn't Rickman-Hawthorne?
The chicken/beef/prunes thing was called (I think it sounds totally ridiculous) "cockie-leekie"...and now I remember, leek was also one of the ingredients...
Yes, Humphrey in a tracksuit! Don't worry, he'll survive... I just have to come up with a storyline...it's going to have something to do with a new plan Jim has (that's his third plan I believe, including those from the real series! Arnold will not be pleased) about health and "setting an example"... Tennis gear is less bad than a tracksuit, I think ...Nigel Hawthorne looked nice in that tennis picture. By the way, I LOVE those pictures of him as a child...so cute, and you can actually already see it's him...
As we're discussing great scenes from YM, I love the one when Jim has gone out of the office to talk to Dr. Cartwright (was it him?) and Bernard phones to Humphrey's office to say Jim has gone out and then he slowly counts to ten and Humphrey comes bursting into the office... "Do you mean he's loose in the building?!" Oh, and the one from Writing on the Wall when they keep saying "I'm appalled." (I referred to that in my fic), which is basically the same thing as in Party Games when they keep saying "This is serious." Oh, I could go on forever...which is kind of what we're doing...and I really like it, because if I like something I always go on forever about it, and other people get a teensy bit annoyed... *ahem* This is nice.
I was reading the Radio Times yesterday (TV guide) and there was a list of tv programmes that people would like to be remade and one of them was Yes Minister! RT suggested that the roles of Sir Humphrey and Jim could be played by Stephen Fry (who I love) and Hugh Lawrie. But Derek Fowlds said that it couldn't be remade because Humphrey and Jim were Nigel Hawthorne and Paul Eddington and no-one could replace them without totally ruining it. And I must say I agree!x
It is appalling! I agree with Derek Fowlds...YM could never be re-made... (And weird clothes as well...even worse than the kimono-thing from the YM book...so I bet you'll be in stitches, like I was ) There's also a little bit of Sir Humphrey there I think...the character Malvolio is rather like him...very much the kind of person who would use the term "NQOCD" if you ask me... )
By the way, I think we need a new thread here, so I'm giving you one for your birthday tomorrow:
And I'm still waiting patiently for the "big update"! It's appalling...
See you on the new thread!
Its so funny, Humphrey has never ever used the phrase NQOCD, but now I associate it with him! He doesn't even say it in my story!x I can't wait to see Twelve Night then! Sounds exaclty like my type of film!x I quite like Shakespeare too actually - dunno why, but I seem to understand the weird language!x
I promise I will update soon!x There's only about two chapters to go anyway!x
