Grim Humor

As an American (who has worked for the U.S. government as a civil servant), I am both amused and appalled by how accurate the maneuvering, lying, and prevaricating between the politicians, the civil servants, and don't forget the media, is portrayed. It so easily transfers to American politics that I am filled with ennui. And this comment is written 30 years after the series was first aired, with nothing changed (except that the maneuvering, lying, and prevaricating by politicians, civil servants, and the media has gotten worse).

This was a brilliant commentary on 1980s politics, but I was always struck by a timelessness...has politics always been this way?

It always will be my favorite Britcom. The authors knew their stuff.

Are you going to pull those pistols or whistle "Dixie"?

I'm sure politics wasn't like this under a dictatorship, but while the political system remains as such, this is always the result.

I, too, am an American recently retired from the U.S. government as a civil servant and when I watch this show, I, too, am filled with ennui.
