I don't think I have ever seen a show where all the leads have different hair color. Knight is gray (almost white) haired. Dussault is a redhead. Van Valkenburgh is brunette. Cornell is a platinum blonde. And Bullock was a dishwater blonde. Surpised they didn't have a bald guy, unless we count the early episodes with the baby.

In a flashback,we see Henry & Muriel dating,Henry has
black hair. So later,that matches with Jackie's black hair.
Muriel having natural red hair,you'd think 1
of her kids would have it. (Did baby Andrew? I forget.)
As for Sara and her blonde hair,it turns out later that the hospital screwd up and accidentally switched (or mixed up) 2 babies. The Rush's in that episode,meet the fasmily that shared Muriel's room.
The aklso grown daughter has black hair too. So,Sara is not
a "blood" Rush. Just like Muriel is not blood related to her mother.
The only other reaspon that Sara exists on this show,is that it was one of the last "jiggle shows" to debut on network TV. That being,puposely hiring women who were "hot" and had large cleavage. All in the name of ratings & getting young male viewers.

Thanks for such an interesting reply. Obviously, I have not seen that later episode. I watched it first-run on ABC but never caught the first-run syndication episodes. Hopefully, Antenna TV will get to those and I will be able to see them.
I do think that the casting of Muriel's mother is very believable. Audrey Meadows and Nancy Dussault look like they could be mother and daughter in real life.
Sara turned out to be the Rushes' biological daughter.
And I've always thought that Audrey Meadows and Nancy Dussault look enough alike to be biological mother and daughter, but as we know, Muriel is adopted.
