ep dont rock the boat
Was that suppose to be a spin off it seemed like it.
shareIn a manner of speaking, Yes.
The last two episodes of season 3, "Don't Rock The Boat" (with Dick Van Patten) and "Family Business" (with Lanie Kazan), are "backdoor pilots". That's when they slip the pilot for a new series into a pre-existing one in the hopes that people will like it and it will then become its own series. Sometimes it works ("Empty Nest" came out of "Golden Girls", and the short-lived "Living Dolls" with Leah Remini came out of "Who's The Boss"), but most of the time it doesn't. So then we're left with an odd episode of a series that mainly centers on completely different characters.

Green Acres did this too. The last two episodes produced (and shown in syndication) are barely about Lisa and Oliver and the Hooterville Saga at all. One of them is about a girl and her father who run a hotel in Hawaii, the other one is about a former secretary of Oliver's who works as a secretary in Los Angeles. Both episodes struck me as very lame backdoor pilots... It may have been cheaper to rework these as episodes of an existing series than try to produce them independently. They're very odd to watch in syndication.

Wherever you go, there you are.
Married With Children did this as well. The Matt LeBlanch(sp) episode with his dad was supposed to be a spin-off, or was one. Not sure.
shareThe Married ... With Children Matt LeBlanc episode with Joseph Bologna did become a spin-off under two different names.
The first was a mid season replacement series called Top of the Heap (1991) that lasted just a handful of episodes. Then they tweaked some of the characters and situations and brought it back a year later as another mid season replacement series called Vinnie & Bobby (1992)
The second one still had Matt LeBlanc as Vinnie and Joey Lauren Adams was also on both as a character named Mona, but it didn't have Joseph Bologna as his dad.
Both shows had just 7 episodes each.
Some of the characters from Married ... With Children, Al, Kelly & Bud, did crossover appearances on the first show, but none of them appeared on the second series.
