Why is the 1st floor appartment smaller than the 2nd?

When the show the house outside both floors look to be the same size but the first floor is much smaller than the second floor on the Rush's house.

Good question. Sometimes one side of a building can be smaller than the other but they're right on top of each other!

Hallway and steps take up floor space on the first floor that doesn't on the second

I wonder why you have to go through the Rushes apartment to get to the 3rd floor.
