It has been a long time since I saw the episode where Muriel meets her birth mother.
What I recall is that Muriel knew the woman was from an affluent area, or well-to-do, and Muriel seemed put off to be told that her mother, Ms. Betty Farnsworth, was en-route to the Orient, until she learned it was for Missionary work. The revelation that Betty Farnsworth was now a nun was a shock, to Muriel.
Ms. Farnsworth knew, or seemed to know, she'd spend the rest of her days away from the U.S., so she hoped for that one time to see her only daughter. She would explain, to Muriel, that times were different when Muriel was born, citing why she gave her up for adoption, and that she was glad to know Muriel was happily married, and had three children, as Betty never had any other children. That may have been why she chose to devote her life to serving others.
The scene when Muriel visited Betty, aboard the freighter, was quite touching.
