The weapons used by the Martians

Anyone wonder about the silvery metal, folded umbrella-looking weapons used by the Martians? What prop-director thought up that goofy design? I know the Martian culture in the book and the television mini-series were highly artistic and reliant upon flowing, organic-shapes. But why the design of an metal umbrella folded up? I'm sure the prop-director could have come up with something a bit more realistic.

Ray Bradbury's book metaphorically refers the weapon's ammunition as, 'angry, buzzing bees'. I've always assumed it was a metaphor for directed energy. In the television mini-series it had to be some kind of directed-energy pulse. The effects were graphically shown. The dead American astronaut's uniform was pulled up and a small, charred black hole, a little smaller than a dime, was seen on the dead man's upper abdomen. A pulse of microwave thermal energy, burned a tiny hole on the skin and immediately flash-cooked the internal organs, causing instantaneous death. It couldn't have been plasma, like the Terminator's favorite weapon. That would have burned the clothing as well. There was no visible external damage on the astronaut's shirt.

It's been a l-o-o-n-n-g time since I read The Martian Chronicles, but I don't remember the famous 'Bee Guns' as being metaphorical, but being actual bee guns that shot out actual bees??

One person wrote that the Martians used this form of weaponry because they would not be who actually killed the person on the other end of this deadly ammo, but that the bees would be the true killers. I, however, don't remember this from the novel.

Cheers!

I always thought they were actual metallic bees that were the ammunition, as well. It's been a long time since I read the stories, though.

I think part of the reason for the design is that it is hard to come up with an original design for something from another world. Also the Martians were shown as working with nature rather than against it and the folded umbrella look of the weapon made it look more organic than technological I think. Also the spiral look of the weapon would probably be a way of explaining the speed the bees would reach. Much like a weight at the end of a piece of string would travel at a given speed if the string was cut so too the bees would be accelerated as they spiraled round inside the Martian weapon.

It is a design that shows up fairly often in SF films and games and RPGs. It part it is reminiscent of the cone shield on a jousting lance.
