Should I Buy The DVD?

I've never seen The Martian Chronicles but I've always wanted to.I have heard a lot of mixed reviews. What should I do?

I happen to love The Martian Chronicles. The book is one of the best ever written. The miniseries is completely true to the book, but then again, keep in mind when it was made. I just bought the DVD a few days ago, and have been watching it, and feeling all nostalgic. I hadn't seen it since it aired in 1980. It's extremely dated (FX and such), but if you watch it and don't expect a modern, big-budget, Sci-Fi extravaganza, I think you'll really enjoy it. Despite it's limitations (by our standards today), it really is a great time.

Yes.

I bought the dvd some time ago, having seen it back in 1980 or so as a kid.

It was very scary and exciting back then, now it felt like it's mainly - and above all - overlong (esp. the bit with the priests in the monutains, it goes on forever, whereas the first episode feels too short in comparison) with weak actor performances and lots of goofy scenes.

Having said that, there's some kind of charm to it. So, I say buy it!

I would go ahead and buy it. It's worth collecting.

I bought a multi-region player just so I could see this again, and it was worth it....

A really great and chilling story about the life and death of "civilisation".....

This is "thinking" sci-fi....

Yes Yes Yes

I am watching it now as I write this. I love it, it has a lot of memories for me. I originally purchased the official video but Castle Communication who released it left out the third and most important episode for some reason. The DVD is complete and the transfer is very good, shame the Stanley Myers soundtrack isn't remastered 5.1 but thats small fry. It is quite faithfull to the book, makes you think about things too. Great performance by Barry Morse as Hathaway in the third Episode.

I got my copy from Ebay and the Soundtrack as well. A very worthwhile purchase, true the effects are dated but that doesn't distract from a fantastic story well told. Go buy it.

a bit late in reply, but I'm watching it now for the third time in about a year. Worth the price.

I loved the miniseries as a kid and want to see it again. I saw parts on sci fi channel a few years ago butg it felt choppy and cut up- not liek the original broadcast from years back.

Does anyone know if there are any extras on the dvd? There should be! Id love commentary track by Bradbury. Id also be interested in the making of THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES. Are there any bonuses?????

reply

Nope!

I just bought it, having watched it back when it first aired, been thinking about it and want to see it again. No regrets. I'm not thru the first episode, but I remember so much about it, so I don't expect any surprises. I wanted to see it again and I don't regret that.

So my vote is yes, buy it, if you havent already and if you like scifi stuff.

I would recommend it, but it really comes down to your personal taste.
