Thomas S. Magnum: Coxcomb Extraordinaire!

On "Magnum, P.I.," Thomas Magnum was supposed to be a private investigator, who, due to his often lack of work, did not even have two nickels to rub together.

And, yet, we always see Magnum decked out in expensive looking sports shirts, jeans, khaki pants, shoes, etc., which looked like he bought them from either the not-inexpensive Brooks Brothers or L.L. Bean catalogs.

In addition, when Magnum and Higgins travel to England, I could swear that Magnum is wearing a Burberry trench coat that can go for around $1000.00. (Although, I suspect that Magnum was wearing the really expensive Burberry trench coat, that can go for considerably more money.)

The ultimate example of downright foppery, however, was when Magnum visited his tv reporter girlfriend in the hospital, in the final two episodes of the show, entitled, "Resolutions." As we see Thomas putting on the big charm for his gorgeous girlfriend in the hospital room, he's seen to be wearing a cotton sweater, rakishly draped (and tied) over his sports shirt. Ugh! I'd swear that the producers of the show were trying (quite successfully) to affect a Robert Redford-Jake Gatsby look from "The Great Gatsby" film of 1975.

And, by the way, how many wear men wear sweaters, draped over their shoulders, in a tropical paradise like Hawaii? Somehow, I could never see the original Steve McGarrett (of "Hawaii Five-O" fame) acting like such a silly dandy.

Maybe Magnum should have borrowed some of Rick's designer Jordache jeans or T. C.'s Nike gym suits to achieve a better and more realistic look?

Beam me up, Icepick!!!

That Burberry coat is a classic.

Those Johnston & Murphy custom-made Conley II Wing Tip shoes (going for a "mere" $375.00 a pair) Magnum wore on the show weren't too shabby either.

I wonder if Magnum got his jeans at Sears Roebuck (at $19.99 a pair for a pair of Lee Jeans) or if he somehow splurged for a couple of pairs of J & M Jeans at a very "sensible" price of $128.00 a throw?

reply

TM is quite classy old school with the J & M's. Must say, I need more comfort, some Bruno Magli action if I'm dressing up.

reply

Remember when the prosecutors were questioning O.J. Simpson about a pair of his expensive shoes he was seen wearing in a photograph (and, which apparently matched the blood stains found at the murder site of his estranged wife and her boyfriend), O.J. replied that he only wore Bruno Magli shoes, and not the "ugly-@ss" shoes prosecutor Marcia Clark was accusing him of wearing on the fateful night of those two horrific homicides?

reply

Correction: OJ called them "ugly ass" (his own shoes) and also said he didn't kill anyone.

reply

Did you ever see that photograph on the back cover of Howard Stern's book, in which you see Howard and O.J. standing directly across from one another, and mugging for the camera with silly looks on both of their faces?

Of course, O.J. is decked out in what looks a like Brooks Brothers sports jacket and Howard is wearing one of his trademark funky rock & roll suits (plus the Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses).

Anyway, the caption under this truly jovial pair reads:

"Getting Away With Murder!" 😀

reply

Well, Steve McGarrett wore a suit and tie 99% the time...Kinda silly in Hawaii.

reply

And many of those those suits looked like they were 100% wool. Couldn't McGarrett have bought a half a dozen or so of Palm Beach/Haspel cotton and seersucker suit to keep his cool in warm Honolulu?

reply

Hello, No offense meant, but a lot of suit and/or sport coat wearers use wool in the summer. A decent quality, all-season wool suit (or sport coat) looks better, feels better and wrinkles less than cotton, or other fabrics.

reply

He's in the v-neck sweater hall of fame.

Opinions are like lostrils, everybody has a few. Thanks for yours.

Thanks, and do try to stay warm out there; that Tami-Flu medicine goes for about $75.00 AFTER insurance. Than you, President Obama for the beloved Affordable Care Act, which all of America, no doubt, loves so much!!!

To the original poster: you must've thought "Hey, I'll use a word that noone uses anymore and they'll have to look it up and that'll make me look smart! Ha ha!"

kathy84,

Actually, I've heard the righteous Rev. Al Sharpton use that particular word repeatedly on his superb television show and whenever the reverend's out there marching/protesting, marching/protesting, marching/protesting, ad nauseam.

As columnist Jimmy Breslin once said of the seemingly ubiquitous Rev. Sharpton's apparent philosophy of life:

"I March, Therefore I Am!!!"

(After all, the Rev. Sharpton is quite the "petit maitre" himself!)😉

Spoken like someone who had his eyes closed when he watched the show.

Exactly which "sport" shirts were expensive? Magnum often wore Hawaiian shirts (usually the same ones, rotating about 4-5), a few polo shirts, some jeans (usually the same ones), some khakis (yeah, those are REALLY expensive!), and various pairs of shorts. He also was seen with a few light jackets which he occasionally wore.

First of all, it's true that Magnum often didn't have much money in his account, and he often didn't have much money on hand. However, when he was paid, he was often paid pretty well (not always, however, because he often took cases where he was only paid a few hundred, or cases where all of the money he made went toward expenses, such as repairing the Ferrari). A few times, it was in excess of $1000, and that was in the earlier seasons before his rates probably went up. Magnum was also more likely to spend that money on himself than anything else, and it's true that he probably spent the money pretty quickly and also on frivolous things, such as the saxophone he bought.

Second, we also don't know what clothes he had before he left the Navy. Trench coats and sweaters were clothes he wouldn't be wearing in Hawaii, but he very likely would have worn in other places where he was stationed, so he may very well have had them stored away. In "Resolutions," he was wearing that sweater after getting off the plane that came from Virginia. If you recall that episode at all (which you clearly don't), it was pretty frigid in Virginia when he left. And he went straight to the hospital after he got off the plane. That's fairly common with travelers.

You might want to pay attention when you watch the show and apply a little bit of obvious logic. Now, if Magnum was constantly running around in three-piece suits and expensive clothes, then you would have a valid point. That's not the case with this show. Do you even recall Magnum having to borrow TC's dinner jacket?

So, wake up, kid. People who don't pay attention or those who simply aren't very bright, only up embarrassing themselves. And, sadly, it's not a hard show to follow.

Burberry trench coats go for over $1500.00. Then again, I can't really expect you to know that because K-Mart's raincoats go for about $29.99, where you, no doubt, buy your ALL of your clothes, junior.
