Why couldn't Galactica 1980 Meet Buch Rogers?

Weren't both tv series affiliated with Glen Larson Productions? Would it have made sense to combine them? Wouldn't you want to see 25th Century Earth StarFighters and Colonial Vipers attacking Cylon Raiders?Hey it's just a thought.

reply

Uh, because 1980 is about 5 centuries before the 25th century. When did Buck get sent into suspended animation? Sometime in the 90's or something? So basically, or or the other would have to time travel for it to occur.

reply

You missed my point. They did not have to set Galactica in 1980. They could have set in the 25th Century during Buck Roger's time. Hey it's just a thought bro.

reply

Maybe the 25th century technology used by buck rogers was created by BSG? Ever think about that?

reply

Whatever floats your boat.

reply

Well, then it wouldn't be Galactica 1980 would it? It would be Galactica 24xx.

reply

Yes. I think Glenn Larson who produced both franchises missed out on a perfect opportunity to combine them. But..hey it's all water under the bridge now right? Since when do producers listen to their fan base? Take a look at what they are doing to the current version of BSG.That's just my 2 cents. May the Lords of Kobol watch over you.

I'm glad my query has stimulated so much interest. However if you had bothered to actually read my post you would have learned that Glenn Larson produced both franchises and missed out on a logical progression to combine them. This way he would have had two successsful tv shows running at the same time as opposed to only one. It has been done before successfully with the Star Trek franchise. Hey I'm only giving my opinion I'm sorry your loyalty to the show is not secure enough to withstand other views. You have a real nice day.

Whatever floats your boat. Enjoy.

reply

Why not? It's perfectly simple. The original show cost so much money to produce that the only way Larson had of bringing it back was setting it in present-day Earth to avoid the high costs that sci-fi inevitably brings. Setting it in the 25th century would have raised to cost to a level that the show wouldn't have been made at all.

You may be overlooking one thing; the budget. By the looks of Galactica 1980, they didn't have a big budget at all. They use stock footage of the fleet in space and when possible, they would shoot outdoors; that didn't require a set. This show only lasted 10 episodes; it was doomed from the beginning, and IMO, GL didn't have the budget of his Buck Rogers show for G1980.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Take a look at what they are doing to the current version of BSG", but then again, you did post this message 3 years ago.

Yes Glen did do Buck Rogers In the 25th Century and I have thought of the idea too! And Mistersprakle I know the series took place in 1980 but the Buck Rogers episode took place in 1979 and went through 1981 so being Season Two had them going through space looking for tribes of Earth who left Earth after the Halocast well why could the two not been combined? It would have made a very intersting series! Now what would you call it though? Galactica Meets the Searcher of Earth or Galactica Meets Buck? Regardless there is a good point here! At least the Earth of Buck Rogers series could have helped fight the Cylons!

reply

That would have been better than what we had. Tell how you think it would have been less fun for Buck Rogers to discover that the Searcher would have found proof of humanity off of Earth as well as on it. They accepted alien life. They accepted that Hawk was descended from people on Earth who were pre-human. It is not like they would not have had the ability to accept Galactica. They were both spacefaring civilizations able to fight off enemy empires.

Anybody want a peanut ?

reply

No, they should have had the Galactica crash land on Gilligan's Island! That would have ruled. Every episode they almost get off the island except Gilligan and Boxy keep messing everything up, causing Skipper and Apollo to hit them with their hats (BTW, Apollo has a hat now.)

To the person getting upset, hey, sorry, just having fun with the topic, I loved both Galactica and Buck Rodgers as a kid, and probably would have wet my pants if they'd crossed over, but it's more fun to joke about it than to actually seriously consider such a thing.

reply

If you are addressing me..I'm not getting upset. You are entitled to your opinions. However I think it's very narrow of you to insult others for theirs. It's just a t.v show man. To show there is no hard feelings how about I indulge you and add some additional sensational suggestions. Why not have the casts of Starlost, Space 1999, Star Trek, Lost in Space all come to the aid of the Colonial Warriors in one huge gigantic battle royale? Of course the Cylons would get help from the Dominion and The Carrot man from lost in Space. We could have Rod Serling narrarate the story. If it looks like the Colonial Warrior are about to lose the war, they can get help from The Justice League.Have fun bro.

I don't know who's posts your reading, but I haven't insulted anyone.

Yes . I was disapointed that Glen Larson did not exploit the potential he had between his two franchises. What a waste for both shows. Thanks for your support.

I'm not sure how big crossovers were in those days.

But it also may have had to do with the fact that Battlestar was an original property of Glen Larson, and Buck Rogers was a licensed property on loan from the newspaper syndicate that owns the original rights. Buck Rogers started out as a comic strip in the 1930s and has been around ever since, in case you didn't know. Maybe there was a legal hangup. Or maybe he just didn't think it would benefit either show.

You know the crossover I wanted to see? Galactica 1980 and Knight Rider. I'm not sure how much longer it was after 1980 that KR debuted, but it would be a good mix. Think about it. Glen Larson even said the reason he put that red tracer light on KITT was because he liked it on the Cylons and wanted to bring it back. I thought it would be neat if Knight Industries had found a couple of Cylons from the 1980 invasion and used their brains to create KARR and KITT. Personally I think KARR acted a lot like Lucifer.

reply

There is a connection of sorts between the 2 shows..the Terrans' cool Starfighters were based on an leftover design that was originally going to be the Viper.

reply

Greatest team up would've been Galactica 1980 and the A Team !!

Also now watching the series on bootleg DVD and I've got to say ... it's not actually that bad!

Maybe the new Battlestar Galactica TV movie currently being planned should be a "reimagining" of Galactica 1980. Afterall we've got Edward James Olmos in a moustache already so he's halfway to becoming a bearded Adama.

Another point ... anyone getting thrown by the moustachioed Adama? I'm half expecting Crockett and Tubbs to appear on the Galactica now.

reply

That would have been a interesting series to have done or at least a movie! Take a look at this at You Tube. If the below site does work for you just put in search Battlestar Galactica Buck Rogers United.

I have been trying to stir up a crossover between both shows for some time. Here's a link to my post which includes the trailer above and a written story for a crossover. The story is very well written and is over one hundred pages. Check it out!

I love your use of music from V The Final Battle and the part where Twiki gets knocked over LOL!

reply

Actually, I didn't make it. But I'll tell him if I ever see him. Thanks though anyways.

Not only that, didn't anyone notice that the co-ordinates of the Galactica when the school ship was attacked were identical to those of Twiki in the episode where he was left floating in space? Something like 33,000 megacays from Alpha Centaura, 30 degrees left of the eliptical plane, 40 degrees north.

Aurora from Take the Celestra also appeared in Planet of the Slave Girls with Dr. Mortinson's secretary.
