Gang members paying to ride the subway

Yes, watching this movie on Sundance again because...it's on. Even though I own the DVD set. Lol

How badass can these gang members be if they actually pay to ride public transit? Am I right? ; )

I found that scene at the beginning to be hilarious. Presumably the gang leader(because he has a vest and the others don't) slides his money through the ticket window, then gets a pile of tokens and then actually stands by the turnstile, pays each gang member's fare with the tokens and each gang member walks through, single file in a VERY orderly fashion. Way too polished and polite to be gang members. Just laughable. I think that gang was supposed to be the Gladiators, not sure.

Other gang members do jump the turnstiles in the movie, maybe police officers were standing close by at that particular station.

Let's not forget the Boppers, with their ties, vests and fedoras who look more like an a cappella group or the Punks, with their overalls and roller skates, who looked like total dorks in my opinion. Or the Hi Hats, who looked more like a bunch of mimes and I don't know how they defended their turf, given all the time they'd spend putting on their makeup (really too much trouble to be in a gang). Badass, indeed.

The Lizzies were probably the most believable gang, given they had no distinguishing features or outfits, could blend in really easily, seemed pretty tough and carried weapons. Only one problem - they're girls! Sorry if I sound chauvinist here but I never heard of an all-female street gang.

I've read about all-female gangs, but most of them are auxiliary gangs tied to a male-gang counterpart. When Vermin asked one of the Lizzies "where are the guys?", she told him that they were up in the Bronx, presumably at the big gang meeting where Cyrus was shot. As to which gang they actually were, that's not really clear.

I think the Lizzies were in the same general vicinity as the Punks, so my guess was that the Punks were the guys that she was referring to.

Not all of the gangs were as flashy. The Orphans seemed to have rather plain but simple uniforms. The Turnbull AC's looked pretty badass, but not quite so well-dressed as the Boppers. Still, if they ever got into it, I'd put my money on the Turnbulls. And even the Rogues seemed to just have those jackets, just as the Warriors only sported their vests over regular street clothes.

Great observations! I sometimes question why I love this movie so much. Lol

When I was a little girl, it was The Baseball Furies that scared me the most. I guess it was the goulish makeup and baseball bats. They just seemed so frightening to a kid. Now, I love that scene. And, I love the line from Ajax about turning that dude into a popsicle. Ha ha

My friend actually bought me a Lizzies shirt. I am going to have to dig in my closet to find it. I felt bad for Rembrandt...obviously had no interest in those hussies. ; )

Considering that Marcelino Sanchez was gay, that wouldn't have been too hard a scene for him to act. Then again, most of the girls weren't that good looking either.

A Lizzies shirt, huh? How cool! I didn't know such a thing existed. For something that was just one movie and a book, it created quite a franchise with a lot of memorabilia.

And can you believe Marcelino passed away so young? : (
I also remember him from The Bloodhound Gang.

When they first see the girls at the subway station, the way the frizzy haired short girl days Hi or Hi ya cracks me up.
Some corny stuff in this movie for sure, but it is still one of my favorites.

It is hard to believe. He was a great actor on the Bloodhound Gang too. It was very sad that he passed away at age 28, probably would have a pretty long and successful career. IMDB doesn't show it, but Paul Greco, who played Sully, leader of the Orphans, passed away at age 55 in 2008. I think (not sure) there were a few other actors in this movie that died untimely deaths, seems like this movie was cursed or something, just like Poltergeist (four of the actors from that movie died somewhat untimely deaths although two of them had serious health problems).

The gangs new something big was going down with many gangs involved, so were on best behaviour with the intention of not attracting heat.
