Not a stalker in the psycho sense, but rather:

Scavengers,
Trespassers,
Adventurers,
Loners,
Killers,
Explorers and
Robbers

In the early drafts of the novel, they were referred to as "prospectors" and "trappers". The writers didn't like those, so introduced the word Stalker to Russia.
The choice was inspired by Kipling's Stalky & Co.

stands for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game. That hasn't got much to do with the movie, but it was heavily inspired by it.

"Stalker" comes right from the book, which is called "The Roadside Picnic" and not Stalker. I don't know why Tarkovsky named it Stalker.

To be honest, STALKER name never made any sense whatsoever in the video game or in the movie.

Just go with it.
