Question about the "Meatgrinder"

I was a little confused as to what exactly this tunnel was, does it represent anything in particular or is it simply part of The Zone's strange phenomenon?

Define "represent". The Meatgrinder is, supposedly, a deathtrap that possibly kills the first person walking through it, but lets the other pass while it recharges. At least that was its working in the novel (where it'd be triggered with 100% probability; Writer would have no chance to survive), though in the movie dangers of the Zone are much more hinted at rather than shown directly. If you're looking for some kind of metaphorical meaning beyond that, your guess is as good as mine.

I think it's just a particularly dangerous section. On any dangerous journey, some parts are more dangerous than others.
