Quite possibly the scariest vampire in film history

I remember watching this as a six-year-old kid and completely sh!tting my pants when Barlow is revealed. I have watched it recently as an adult and it still has a very strong impact on my psyche. A truly terrifying looking monster. Well done guys!

Just curious: have you seen the 1922 film Nosferatu directed by F W Murnau? That is where this particular image of Barlow comes from.

There is also the film by Werner Herzog called Nosferatu the Vampyre that uses the same type of imagery. The Herzog film was released in January 1979 ten months prior to the initial broadcast of Salem's Lot.

I've seen Nosferatu and I still think Barlow is scarier. The whole presentation, not to mention sound, just puts him over the top. Nosferatu never impacted me like that.

A valid point. The 1922 movie was made in the silent era, and thus did not have the impact of sound that modern films have.

Oh, of course! But they don't hold a candle to ol' Barlow! If you wanna see a good vampire movie in the same image of Nosferatu check out Shadow of the Vampire http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0189998/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_79.

How Dafoe didn't get the Oscar for this is beyond me. The Academy just hates horror films.

You would be hard pressed to find a vampire movie I hadn't seen. 

To be honest I think Danny Glick is actually scarier. The bedroom window scene may possibly be the most terrifying thing ever put on film.

The only part of the film that really ever bothered me was Ralphie as a vampire. But that vanished after I watched the film a couple of times.

How was Mr Barlow able to negotiate all those antiques deals in Europe when he's a blue mutant with crazy fangs and can only communicate by imitating a power drill?

reply

Straker did the negotiations I'm sure. The antique store was just a front for what Barlow was really doing.

Quite so. Straker was described in the book as the 'front-man; the one who deals with the public'. Good point.

Whether they actually occurred or not, Straker mentioned Barlow's frequent meetings in Europe, which conjures a bizarre scenario once you're aware that Barlow communicates via power tool noises...

ANTIQUE DEALER: I think you'll find the acrylic detailing on this 15th Century French vase to be quite exemplary...

MR BARLOW: Vvvvvvvvrrrrrrrrrrggghhhhh Rwaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggghhh VVVRRRRRRR!!!

Probably not true at all. Mr. Straker just tells such stories to make people believe that Mr. Barlow is an active antiques business partner. Mr. Straker handles everything, just as we see him do in Salem's Lot. Although, I do you enjoy your depiction of Mr. Barlow's opinion on antiques in a meeting! 

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

For those who didn't know, Salem's Lot also had a CBS prime time showing in 1981!

reply

That's when I saw the second half for the first time. In'79, I was too afraid to continue to watch it the next night after Danny bit Mike which is where the first half ends.
