The movie tried to do to much. They cut most of the books out without explanation. They totally cut out Orin ill fated marriage with Laura Pitts, Ty and Drusilla, and Tell and Ange. I think they need to do a movie with each book individually instead.
shareWhen you consider that the movie only used two books, "Sackett" and "The Daybreakers", then it covered the time line pretty well. The full details of the relationships you have mentioned don't really happen until other books.
shareI disagree. There was quite a bit of detail about Orrin's marriage in The Daybreakers. Yes you find out more about Ty and Dru a bit in snippets from other books but Daybreakers set up their relationship quite well.
I also was let down because the movie could have taken the time to really get into the political, racial battle going on in New Mexico and also showed more of how the brothers set up their home and brought their mom to live with them, etc. There was sooo much detail left out the movie--it only hit high points of each book and then it distorted some of them.
Oh well, it's still enjoyable but I will always wish it could have been more.

im with ya. this one was, what, three hours?
it coulda been at least as long as lonesome dove. woulda been better for it, and not lost a thing or turned boring. there's sure enough material in the books to expand it significantly from what it was here.
but i too don't complain. i like it nonetheless. me and my grandad watched this at least five dozen times, lol. along with josey wales, high plains drifter, pale rider and silverado. there were other probably but those stick in my memory. then in 89 we saw lonesome dove together and of course that started a whole new tradition.
grandad died ten years ago but every time i see any of those movies on it brings back huge, significant memories.
on a side note, these flicks harken to a certain frame of mind that i think is lost on most of amerika now. the idea of justice, fairness, hard work, honor, self respect; these are things i take away from lamour's books.
i love the sacketts till the day i'm gone. nuff said.
