The mute Irish girl

In S.O.S, theres an irish girl who boards at Queenstown and Lawrence Beesley watches her and she looks at him like shes seen him before, later he watches her walk through to the cabins, and later hes watching her with Leigh Goodwin, is there a connection ? Have they met before? do we find out why they look at each other quite mysteriously ?

I don't know who that girl was, but I presume she's a girl Beesley described in his book The Loss of the S.S. Titanic. He had never met her before and I don't think he ever saw her again.

"Leigh Goodwin" was a composite of two women he met, neither of whose names he ever learned. One was a schoolteacher and the other was on her way home to the U.S. from India; obviously Leigh Goodwin is a combination of these two.

I think most of this movie is based on Beesley's book; I strongly recommend it. Beesley was a very interesting and insightful observer.

Maybe thats why the Titanic sinks on the 12th April and not the 14th !
That has always baffled me
Plus its nice to see the 2nd Elder of Krypton (Harry Andrews) captain the Titanic

That April 12th thing is a really glaring mistake, I don't know how they did that. The only thing I can figure is maybe they were going by Commnader Lightoller's book The Titanic and Other Ships, which he wrote many years after the disaster. Although it's a fascinating read that gives you a real feel for the type of guy Lightoller was, it's riddled with errors, among them placing the collision with the iceberg at 2:20 on April 12, 1912. His memory of the event must have faded by the time he wrote the book.

I believe Harry Andrews was Starbuck in the Gregory Peck Moby Dick.

Titanic Voices is an amazing book for all the passenger accounts on the sinking and impressions of the ship itself.
Just imagine the Titanic going down in todays climate of media interest and publicity, i have a feeling it could possibly cause as much horror and tragedy as the 9/11 attacks, both are the same, they both said that although how safe we think we are from the unknown, we can never know what is round the corner.
Which is why i think the story sticks out
As Leigh (composite) Goodwin says "Ill never see the world in the same way ever again, its not as safe and snug as it once was"
Its such a tragic line

Was this girl supposed to be mute? I don't think so. She did speak once while in the lifeboat. As the girls from steerage were watching the ship begin to slip away, she called out the name "Martin". One of the other girls embraced her while turning her away and told her "Don't look" as they both wept for their male friends that were still on board. A rather sad moment really. She had become involved with Martin Gallagher, a young Irishman that fell in love with her the moment he saw her. Right before that scene, we were seeing the three Irish males the girls were travelling with as the rising water reached them on the boat deck.

However, I must concede that as many times as I have watched this movie I never payed much attention to the fact that this woman had almost no dialogue. Her character is referred to as "Irish Beauty" in the credits. She and Martin Gallagher looked really good together. Sadly, only young Daniel Buckley survived from among the Irish men depicted here.
