IIRC, The Japanese kid Data in Goonies used a lever in his belt buckle to hoist himself out of a hole much like Lupin did to keep himself from falling in the movie. I know Spielberg's seen this, so do you think that he was paying homage to it?

You're both wrong. Speilberg only said the car chase was the best he'd ever seen. He never mentioned anything about the rest of the film. If you don't believe me go and watch the original trailer for the film. It kind of pisses me off how lots of reviews and sites use this as a claim to fame when it's not even true.
