Pixar Cars reference

I only started getting interested in the new Pixar movie when I saw that a character in it named Luigi was a Fiat 500. A *YELLOW* Fiat 500
Being a big LupinIII fan I went NUTS!
I'll explain...
Hayao Miyazaki directed Castle of Cagliostro, and seeing as how John Lasseter, the head of Pixar, is such a fan not to mention a friend of Hayao Miyazaki its painfully obvious that "Luigi" in the movie was made to look like Lupin's car from "Castle of Cagliostro".

See for yourself.

Here's Luigi from "Cars" : http://adisney.go.com/disneypictures/cars/main.html?sec=1&car=12

I just can't believe no one's noticed this yet. I fully expected there to be a thread about this already. Its not even in the trivia section here or the trivia section for Cars.

I think you are correct with that observation! Good call, Goemon! ;)

Holy cow! That is so cool. To bad he didn't call him Lupin!

reply

Well "Luigi" is still a 5-letter name that starts with "Lu".
Lupin
Luigi

Pretty close if you ask me.
But since Lupin is french it may have confused audiences since he's an Italian car.
It'd be interesting to see if his name changes to Lupin for the Japanese release of Cars.

OMG--!! Just came back from Cars (which was fantastic), cannot BELIEVE I didn't see that for myself!! Duh! *slaps head* Too awesome, thanks for pointing that out! ^^

The whole reason I even started becoming interested in Cars is because of that Lupin reference. If it was some other car I probably wouldn't have gotten so hyped into it since I'm not even that big a fan of Pixar's work. Not that they suck or anything, I just wasn't all that interested, outside of Toy Story of course. But when I first saw "Luigi" on the back of a cereal box it hit me like a brick to the face and I got all excited about the movie. It's real cool to go to the store and buy tons of toys of Lupin's trademark car, as if owning a few dozen already isn't enough. :-)

I'm watching Castle of Cagliostro right at this very moment - the cars are IDENTICAL. Man that is a fantastic little find there! I think you would be very correct too, they are good friends. What a wonderful little homage put in there. =3

I would dearly love to see Mayazaki make a Pixar movie.

Won't happen of course, but how great it would be...
