Although this is one of Miyazaki's weakest, artistically and story wise, the ending is remarkably satisfying and brilliantly drawn. This not only makes the picture worthwhile, but gives Ghibli fans a nice origins piece, where they can see the sparks of brilliance that got a fire going.

Sure it lacks the profoundity of Mayazaki's later work, but it's still a great ride, and still my favourite film of his :-)

I would rather watch the worst of Miyazaki than most of the junk Hollywood has to offer, any day. Considering the age of this anime and its low budget, it's very good.
