I had similar experiences as a 'tween'
I remember this small cabin community my family would go to during the summer. Aside from the adults having their golf, there wasn't much for us kids to do in that small community than hike in the woods (which was what we mostly did), ride an occasional dirt bike, or go to the teen center and play pool and video games. As we went from young to mid-teens, kids were restless and started drinking and smoking weed as we were bored backpacking and hiking the SAME old trails in a 30 square miles radius. I do miss it now...........dearly.
Kids need things to do and beneficial programs to lead them. When they get to be early to mid teens, they turn to drugs/alcohol out of boredom. Becomes far more destructive later. The best and worst parents BOTH are plagued by this. It happens.
At least the cabin community HAD something for kids to do. If kids DON'T have things to do, they will start doing things like kids in this classic movie. GOD Bless all you real life parents.
