Origins
Just a quick word on the origins of the storyline as there are a lot of reviews of this title comparing it to the Alan Moore graphic novel/Johnny Depp film (some of which are defamatory).
In the 1970s the ongoing appetite and intrigue surrounding the Jack the Ripper case resulted in radical interpretations of testimonies and evidence, that in turn influenced the fun conspiracy theories beloved by screen writers. The most influential of these theories is Stephen Knight's 'Jack The Ripper: The Final Solution.' Basically to avoid spoilers, I'll say that his story involves an establishment cover up and a psychopathic 'Jack' (who's a schizophrenic figure of authority).
Murder by Decree and From Hell are just two films inspired by Knight's book. I think they're both good. If I have any complaints regarding From Hell it would be the amalgamation of the real life figures of Inspector Abberline and Robert James Lees (a spiritualist who claimed to have had visions of the Ripper murders).
However this is because I have a particular fondness for the 1988 TV adaptation of the myth Jack the Ripper. I especially like the handling of Lees' visions and Michael Caine's dynamic Abberline. It's really a must if you like these movies.
