The end of the genre

This movie was the final disaster movie of the decade. By this point, the genre had become a parody of itself. Veteran actors on autopilot, awful dialogue and cardboard characters. Sean Connery looked bored senseless and Martin Landau turns it up to 11 in terms of his acting. Henry Fonda puts in an appearance to add gravitas.

Whole cities are destroyed and then the cast just move on as if it never happened. A great cheesy disaster flick that must have been the inspiration for Armageddon.

Not quite! I've always felt that When Time Ran Out (1980) is the end of the classic 70s disaster genre. Yes, I know it was released in March 1980 but filmed in 1979. I agree about Martin Landau though: waaay over the top.

I never heard of "When Time Ran Out" and I'm the right age.

Meteor wasn't that terrible, everybody at the time said it sucked, and I just forgot about it.
