Mariel Hemingway truly ruined this movie

How did she get an oscar nomination for this? Her acting was just horrible. Add to the whole thing that her face is just hard to look at. How do people here claim she was beautiful? She is simply repulsive looking. Flat face, thin lips, big jaw.

Trolls like you are ruining imdb. Go away, douchebag.

I'm not trolling, relax.

Her acting was fine--her two scenes later on in the movie are the highlights of the film, IMO--but her face creepily reminds me of Billy Corgan. I CANNOT BE ALONE IN THIS.

Cannot be unseen. For *beep* sake...

What acting?
I don't have any problem with her looks, but that voice!
Jodie Foster would have been a better choice.

I somewhat agree on her looks, not ugly by any means though. Acting-wise though, she killed it on the break-up scene - most memorable from the movie.

I just don't get how people call this beautiful.

reply

she was very realistic in her acting and looks, the break up scene she pulled off with woody was really touching

reply

Because your idea of beauty is posting about Breaking Bad obsessively.

reply

She's gorgeous and gives a fantastic, moving performance. Maybe you just had to be there.

Mariel is beautiful in Manhattan and absolutely stunning in STAR 80. Look it up, children-who-don't-know-a-world-without-the-internet generation.

I consider she played an excellent part. She had a very girlish voice and looks but had a very mature manner and dialogue. A great supporting actress to the insincere and poor character of Woody.

reply

I agree - she was terrible indeed.

reply

I concur 100%.

its not a conventional beauty, but thats exactly the intrigue.
She was the hottest thing i ever saw in Superman IV.

Regarding her acting in Manhattan, i tried hard to find flaws, and couldn't. She stood toe to toe with anyone in that film. Keep in mind, she was playing 17... a shy, innocent, awestruck, self-conscious 17 year old. Whatever you saw on the screen is what you would see if you were seeing a real person in that scenario.

The main 2 emotional parts of the film featured her... When Woody breaks up with her, and when Woody tries to get her back. Totally believable, for me.
