black chicken?

Anybody remember that part in the movie where Dracula turned into a bat and flew into a hispanic family's window and they thought he was a black chicken? I guess they never saw a chicken before? I thought it was really funny when that spanish girl was pointing at the bat and said "a chicken!" LOL!

I could be wrong, but you could both be kind of right: I think the family was supposed to be Puerto Rican which could make them sound hispanic but look like they're African American.

reply

I think they were supposed to be Puerto Rican.

reply

That scene was very poor with dumb humor.

reply

Yes, I remember that part. But wasn't it a black family or some Jamaican family? I guess they didn't realize what it was and just assumed it was a chicken, considering that they were poor and starving.

reply

There's black people from Puerto Rico, so they were black Puerto Ricans that had moved to New York. It was just that they didn't know what to call bats in english, so they shouted out 'Black Chicken!" Yeah, that's one of my favorite scenes, it isn't to stupid at all. Don't be so afraid of being called racist, the scene isn't any more offensive than making fun of rednecks, gothics or fat people.

There's black people everywhere genius. Travel and you will find black people in Ireland, Mexico, Germany and all other places.

If your post is directed at me, I understand completely, I was trying to make the same point you made to another poster in a more sophisticated manner.

Well, they just figured it was a chicken since they had never seen a bat before. Don't forget how hungry they were. But the humor there was they weren't afraid of Dracula as a bat.

I recall that scene and wish they now edit it. Didn't appreciate how they had to portray a minority family living in poverty. This scene was racist

reply

The movie pokes fun of people across the board, whatever their skin color or socioeconomic status. For instance, the beginning makes fun of Romanian Communists and then rural villagers.

reply

If a film is gonna poke fun at anyone, it should be the white person. Never do it to a minority. You should know better

reply

The movie's an AIP production and was marketed all around the world at the time of release and continues to be seen across the globe to this day via streaming (etc.), including of course many countries where Caucasians are the minority.

Besides, I noticed that minority actors like Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford had zero problem participating in the flick. No doubt because they have a sense of humor and don't see "racism" everywhere and anywhere like the real racists of today do.

If a film is gonna poke fun at anyone, it should be the white person. Never do it to a minority.

Who made up this rule? And how is it that filmmakers or any artist is bound to it, especially when it concerns spoofs (where literally anyone is a potential target)?

reply

All scenes that don't portray people of color as the most intelligent, wonderful, giving, dignified and respectful people is racist and should be edited out forever.
