Dustin Hoffman abusing Meryl Streep on set!

Apparently, because Hoffman was going though a divorce at the time and, at the same time did not want to be upstaged by a woman, relentlessly abused Meryl Streep on set. He slapped her really hard across the face, made horribly sexist comments regarding her profession and even taunted her about the recent death of her boyfriend John Cazale.

I mean, I just can't believe it! How on earth did Meryl allow him to get away with this?? In this sort of profession, actors are supposed to support and trust each other, not abuse one another for the spotlight, or because they feel bitter in their private life.

I never imagined Dustin Hoffman could be so cruel to women like that. Although he admitted that when he made Tootsie, he realised for the first time, he had been brain washed into this chauvinistic attitude. But I never thought he could be a hitter.

And why didn't the director intervene in this either? They all knew what was going on and were afraid that Meryl would speak out about it during the awards season. But strangely, she didn't.

You like the word "abuse" is all I can be certain about. Not into men so much, are you.

This is still so hard to believe and if I have trouble getting over it I don't see how Meryl Streep did. Maybe she didn't as they never worked together again, right?

That's method acting for you. It was Hoffman's way to prepare for one of his greatest roles. Streep understood that and was cutting him some slack.
