Wait But, Apocalypse...

Before i go on a rant i will say why i think this film may have one; in the 50s you didn't get divorced, in the 60s it became looser and in the 70s it was kind of a thing. So there for this film was groundbreaking… For the time in which it was made and released. WHAT!!! This film was absouloutly disgraceful compared to Apocalypse Now. John Milius and Francis Ford Coppola created something just groundbreaking in the 70s no one wanted to push the Vietnam war button by making a film about (except The Deer Hunter). So which is more groundbreaking? Apocalypse Now ding ding ding!!! So does anyone on here think that Kramer Vs. Kramer is a better film than Apocalypse Now? And don't give me the "but the racism, the violence" because that is war people!

Someone just watched Milius

Eventually, even Coppola admitted 'Apocalypse Now' failed on many levels.
"Full Metal Jacket" had more power---from the bootcamp half to the ending with the sniper drawing America more and more into morally bankrupt situation.

Neither APOCALYPSE NOW-79' or FULL METAL JACKET-87', are sterling examples of Vietnam and they are both quite flawed to boot. That said, APOCALYPSE NOW, is still a masterful cinematic achievement. Oliver Stone's PLATOON-86' takes the cake by my book, even if it does manipulate and turns the soldiers\vets into flawed victims. As a result, it did make a greater emotional impact and wasn't striving or grandstanding with metaphysical themes and pretense. It was more 'real' and 'relatable' from the ground up and not born so much of massive egos, like Coppla or Kubrick's visions.

There were about 20 films about Vietnam before Apocalypse Now - Coming Home in 1977 being one of the best, but also The Boys in Company C, Heroes, The Visitors etc.

I haven't seen The Boys In Company C, but there is another Vietnam film from the late 70's with Burt Lancaster, Go Tell The Spartans which is also very good. These tended to slip through the cracks, due to lack of hype. Cimino had a film of great emotional impact and a strong 70's star heading the cast of Deer Hunter and Coppola had his big name attached along with his massive ego to Apocalypse Now. This is what would have helped these films gain the fame that they have. Even if Apocalypse Now had been released the same year as The Deer Hunter, I don't believe it would have been considered the better film. It wasn't as well rounded character wise and too surreal and advant garde for most tastes.

It was not groundbreaking; divorce was not a new thing on the 1980, nor frowned upon. You're speaking more about the 60's. UNless you mean it's groundbreaking to portray the Ordinary People-type of mother/wife.
