What were they supposed to be eating when Avram passed out while he was dancing? I couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be.

I'm guessing peyote.

It was definitely peyote. Avram thought it was "fruit," but Ford knew damn well what it was - as is obvious from the apprehensive look on his face throughout that scene where they are sitting around the fire with the chief and Wilder keeps eating more and more of it.
