I clicked onto this movie's page as I vaguely remembered seeing it in the mid-80's and was looking at the past work of Director Boaz Davidson after recently seeing "The Last American Virgin". When I read the plot outline in the review on this page I was stunned to see that "The Last American Virgin" seems to be an exact remake of this movie down to every last incident and plot point. Has anyone seen both? If so, which do they think is the better of the two movies?
The Last American Virgin is definitely a remake of Lemon Popsicle, but there was a scene in the Last American Virgin that wasn't taken from Lemon Popsicle, but Lemon Popsicle 3: Hot Bubblegum. The scene where the three guys bring home the three girls, and Gary tries to cut Millie's bra strap with scissors while she's eating chips. Well, replace chips with peanuts, and you have that same scene in Lemon Popsicle 3: Hot Bubblegum.
I've seen both. I've seen the entire Lemon Popsicle series, in fact. I think Lemon Popsicle is slightly better. Anat Atzmon (Nili, Lemon Popsicle) is a very attractive woman, while I didn't find Diane Franklin from LAV attractive, except in one scene, where she and Gary were eating breakfast near the end. Vote: Anat Atzmon by a mile.
Zachi Noy (Yudale, Lemon Popsicle) does a slightly better job than Joe Rubbo (David), although I am basing this on seeing the whole Lemon Popsicle series, and if the Last American Virgin would have had its intended sequels, it may well have been a tie between Noy and Rubbo. I felt that Zachi Noy was especially good at showing his friendship with Benzi later on in the series.
Now, to the womanizers: Steve Antin (Rick, LAV) is a lot better than Jonathan Sagall (Momo, Lemon Popsicle). Antin has a sliver of likability, while I couldn't stand Sagall. Vote: Steve Antin.
Gary (LAV) and Benzi (Lemon Popsicle). Yiftach Katzur (Benzi) was especially good when he was declaring his love for Nili. Lawrence Monoson (Gary) was great during the ending, as his face went from happiness to deep sorrow. A tie.
Gary's parents and Benzi's parents. Benzi's parents were great. There was a lot of humorous banter between Benzi's parents, and between Benzi and his parents. Gary's parents struck me as bland. My vote goes for Benzi's parents.
Lemon Popsicle gets three votes, the Last American Virgin gets one vote, and one vote is tied. Lemon Popsicle is my choice. Both are great films, though.
I saw LAV when it first came out in the 80's and only recently (finally!!) go to see Lemon Popsicle (thanks to Netflix....if you haven't seen it, and are a member, it's on Watch Instantly!) I really loved both of them, and loved how LAV was a virtually shot-by-shot remake of LP. I loved the 50's soundtrack as much as I loved the 80's of the other....it's really a toss up for me. I did love the "Rose" character in LAV far more than the LP counterpart...she had some hilarious lines. Both had that horribly depressing, but very realistic ending.
lemon popsicle blows last american virgin out of the water, i grew up watching these videos and both are very funny but the popsicles are originals which ofcourse are often better.
I haven't seen either version, but I bought the American remake yesterday. I'll watch it soon. The only other film in this series I've seen in the second one, Going Steady.
I'm late to the party, I grew up on LAV and just saw a preview for Lemon Popsicle and the scenes they showed were so similar I thought what a rip off, then I come here and find this thread what a surprise. I'm currently "getting" the movies now.
I would like to go back in time and kill the idiot who created the term "reimagining."
Late to reply but anyway. Lemon Popsicle is easily the better out of the 2, the music is better, the actors are funnier, the setting has more atmosphere.
Last American Virgin is a bit boring and stale, bad acting/actors, and crappy music for the most part, 80s was a good time though but somehow i think it missed the mark.
I am sure teens can identify with either movie, but i do think a lot of reviews rest on which one they saw first. I saw LP in 1982ish and LAV a long time after.
Lemon Popsicle is far superior, the cast is perfect and the soundtrack is awesome. TLAV is a decent remake but Gary comes across as a total creeper which is a vibe I didn't get from Benji.
