Doc Ax Scene Question (Spoilers)

I've seen the film a while ago and if I'm correct, there was a scene where Doc axed his hand right in front of the guard in the work shop room. I remembered that the guard took away his painting before the incident. Just wondering though. Why did Doc axed his hand for?

English says to Morris, in a scene shortly after the incident, that it was because the Warden took away Doc's painting privileges, presumably because the Warden disliked the painting Doc had made of him.
