Clint going thru the metal detector
Wow what well trained guards. He pats him down after confiscating the metal thingamajig and tells him to move on, rather than send him thru the detector again. Thank god they don't work at airport security.

Probably due to utter boredom of doing this job year after year and no specific suspicion on Morris.
shareAt first I thought the same "what a dumb scene", but then it shows the guard thinking very highly of himself, and Clint as a douche. He was probably to blind thinking he was mr. high and mighty :)
shareAnd how about that intensive pat-down? The guard confiscates a tiny 2-inch piece of metal, then after a couple pats on Clint's thick winter coat he's like "All right, you're clean. Get out of here." (!!!)
Between that and the welding scene... at some point you have to point out that this movie kinda sucks.
"at some point you have to point out that this movie kinda sucks".
Really? The fact is, it's a true story! They may have taken some license, but somehow, Morris was able to break through the vent in his cell.
There have been several real-life prison escapes, owing largely to the guards laziness and boredom. They do the same thing day after day and sometimes they get pretty lax. I think it's possible that a guard could put so much faith in the prison and the institution to do his job for him, that he'll (maybe unknowingly) get lazy.
I've been going through your package sergeant. Do you mind my looking over your package?
The true story part isn't that specific, but I thought it was an excellent scene because it's a real life con method. You make the target think he won so the conflict is over in his mind.
shareHow 'bout the drilling with a tiny air fan!!!?
--------------------------------------------
I own you.
No, that's believable. It would take longer than using an actual drill but it would get the job done. Also, the fan motor makes less noise than a drill would and likely wouldn't be heard by the guards.
shareafter the guard called him stupid, he accepted the insult vs having to go through the detector again, i believe that is called misdirection, mislead, but the accordion case.....phew!!
shareWell, you gotta remember, the film is set to take place in 1960. Back then, they didn't have nearly as many worries about security, etc, as we do today. In 1960, nobody even knew what Vietnam was (until a few years later).

That bothered me too. Too contrived.
