"I wonder who the real savages are?"- well, I understood that as the main characters were just as bad as the cannibals. They were just as savage and horrible as what most tribes are portrayed. The difference is, the characters did it for entertainment, as the cannibals did it naturally.
Another interpretation can be that the truth is better to be hidden than to be told to impurity an image. Meaning that a more positive image was shown to people of the United States had a more positive image of these characters, besides those closest to them, and the executives would rather leave that image be, than show them the images that say otherwise, whether at this point it is debatable whether they ever deserved such light imaging from the world or not.
