Oh My, The Immense Butthurt on this Board.

I cant say I've seen a board with this much whiners and complainers. Yes the animal scenes were difficult to watch but Jesus. Do you really need to be so preachy? Insulting people who enjoy this movie for enjoying it is ridiculous. I liked this movie. That doesnt mean I started fapping like crazy over the rape scene. I enjoy the message and the interesting filming style so somehow (by one posters logic) I should be admitted to an asylum. Which is the equivalent to saying that people who like this movie are deranged and psychotic simply for enjoying a film. And can you Vegetarians chill out? Whether it was right or wrong for them to film the animals being killed is irrelevant. I came on this board to discuss the film, not be bitchd at over the internet. Sorry if I am not coming off as butthurt or preachy now but I'm tired of not being able to talk about movies any more. Everyone always has to bring morals into it. Just chillout...

The animal cruelty stuff was pretty bad though, they probably shouldn't have done that. But yeah exactly. If you're some kind of puritan why did you watch a film called Cannibal holocaust anyway? Don't get offended and complain. Just turn it off.

reply

Right? It always amazes me how people will have a fit over a turtle but seem to be completely opinionless on a woman being raped with a rock and then beaten to death with it. I'm an animal lover but I'm not going to go about declaring the fan following of a movie mentally ill.

The thing I feel people overlook as well is that sure the content is brutal, but there are versions without the animal violence so you don't have to see it. That's my one gripe with movie goers in general. Nobody bats an eye at violence towards people (such as the film crew gang raping a native tribal woman), but god forbid something happens to a snake or a spider [and this applies to violence that is real and staged]. It's just weird how people are to me.

Watching the version that deletes all the animal killing is pointless. Enjoy it as it was intended to be - shocking, depraved, violent, horrifying and utterly brilliant.

The best horror film I've ever seen - I know it will never be topped, which is such a shame and such a pleasure.

I wonder if people realise that over 80% of animals are now killed by cutting their throat without being stunned first - and I bet it puts none of them off their Bacon sandwiches (it doesn't me - yummy).

I disagree. Watch the film however you want to watch it. I always elect to watch the 'animal cruelty-free' edit on the DVD, and do not feel that the film is lacking in any significant way as a result of my choice.

What is your point?

If you are trying to downplay the suffering that animals go through before they are turned into meat, you owe it to yourself to watch documentaries on the living conditions (and I use the term loosely) that animals endure on factory farms. It's not as though they are left to live peacefully as nature intended until farmers or butchers pluck them out of their natural settings to slaughter them. They live in miserable, stressful, and painful conditions that are worse than the conditions most prisoners endure.

Like the director, I do not feel that animals should have been slaughtered on camera for Cannibal Holocaust. However, I agree with the director that people freak out over the animals killings because they live lives so isolated from the reality of things (Deodato grew up in rural Italy, so he was very familiar with how animals are slaughtered on farms).

With the exception of the coatimundi and the pig, all of the animals died swifty, feeling minimal (if any) pain before dying. The turtle slaying appears to be the most gruesome and most prolonged, but in actuality, the turtle died and stopped experiencing pain the moment it was decapitated at the onset of the slaughter.

I`ve been thinking about it, and to me, the reason people don`t find human deaths on films (staged/acted/fake ones that is.) is because writers just dont know how to write good characters.

I`m a big horror film fan and for years I believed I was desentized to violence. One day, I saw a film named Eden Lake, by far one of the most gut-wrencthing experiences I`ve ever felt. I was both horrifyed and scared. The reason why that is, is because the characters were well written. The protagonist was likable and the villain was despicable (in a good way).

I can see Saw and Hostel no problem, heck, I can watch both A serbian film and the human centipede 1 and 2 while eating. But for the life of me, Eden Lake left a deep mark on me and I have not watched the movie since because that film left me exhausted. Could probably watch the other films I mentioned many times over but not Eden Lake, it was that good.

This is why most people cry when a dog dies in a film. Animals are just more innocent, so they gain our empathy right away. Human characters must earn our empathy. Sure, if they were real people we would care, but audiences are subconciously learning that unless the characters are likable, interesting or sympathetic, there`s no reason to moarn for their death.

Yeah Eden Lake was pretty sick but kept me in suspense.

People were upset over a vampire throwing a CGI horse at a fictional version of Abraham Lincoln in "AL:VH".

That movie just went too damn far...

It's pretty annoying. I'd like to talk about the actual film, but people here cannot get past the animal killings. Don't look, turn your head away, whatever. But enough is enough. This board is the absolute worst w/r/t on IMDb.

For every controversial film, there will be people who take out their inability to cope on others.

The violence and real animal cruelty are not the reason this movie pissed me off(although they certainly are unpleasant and offputting). It pissed me off because of its so called "I wonder who the real cannibals are" message. IMO, the movie was far too exploitative and sleazy to be pointing the finger at the so-called staging of fake news, which to be fair, im sure still happens, but i felt Deodato was trying to have his cake and eat it too. It was like the Funny Games of the 70s. Still, for the most part, it does work as an early italian gorno in the cannibal jungle genre, and the main actor playing Alan was really great, and he was genuinely despicable and fun(and i use that term very loosely with this movie) to watch.
