This movie is actually pretty good!

You hear all kinds of crap about this and while I found the animal killings to be disgusting and inexcusable especially the turtle killing which seemed to go on forever. But the movie is pretty well-made and the cinematography of the forest is beautiful. It has a good message too.

Not a movie I "liked" or "enjoyed" but I cannot call it a piece of crap. I do hold it responsible for inspiring a slew of crappy films made by some total jabronis like Umberto Lenzi who killed more animals unnecessarily. So, while it spawned the found footage subgenre, it also popularized this darker and completely unnecessary subgenre. So, that goes against it.

For the life of me, I don't get why people *beep* all over this movie. It's one thing to denounce it for the animal cruelty, but to just disregard it as a whole is ridiculous.

Like with other "disturbing" movies like A Serbian Film and Salo, this wasn't violence for the sake of being violent and screwed up. It has a message behind it, and it's not too hard to understand it if you pay attention; and nothing upsets me more than when people dismiss an intelligent movie because they didn't get it.

Outside that; the movie is very well-made, the score is phenomenal, and the cinematography is beautiful and stunning beyond words. I gave the movie a high rating for a reason, and seeing animals get butchered isn't why. I just wish people saw it the way myself and others do.

This movie is a horror masterpiece, plain and simple!

I think this film shows a moralistic view of what happens when these young adults go to see a different way of life for the mere sake of sensationalizing it and wanting others to think these native tribes are animals. Notice how the professor is able to "communicate" with the tribes by trying to understand their ways, not mock them as the young adults did. I found this film to have a very important message for those who go to visit other tribes with a preconceived agenda rather than to learn about their lifestyle. As the Professor says in the end "I wonder who the true cannibals are".

I think this is a great movie. The violence and animal killings are brutal and shocking so many this off as "just another exploitation film." But I think that's unfair because, as you said, it has merits beyond the violence. It has good cinematography, beautiful scenery, an excellent musical score, decent acting, and an interesting, thought provoking message that makes you take a look at our society and human nature in general. If all this movie had to offer was the violence the criticisms would be fair but it is more than that whether people choose to see it or not.

Actually it was Lenzi who first popularised 'tribal cannibalism' subgenre through Men from Deep River

Yes, this gruesome movie is pretty good...and disturbing.
Just watched it, did read some reviews and some threads here on the board.

There's a scene I don't really understand, starting at min 20.
The man pulls the woman out of the boat and kills her in a ritualistic, sexually abusive way.
He then puts her back in the boat and shoves the boat to the river, only with her body.
She's "punished for adultery" and "if he have not killed her, his tribe would've killed him".
Is that the same woman who's later seen (after being raped) dead and impaled?

The killing of the animals was and is controversial.
While the amateurish way how the guy butchered the little coati was ugly, I agree to this:

The animals in this film are killed on camera and then eaten by the crew afterwards – this is shocking to a modern day audience. I just want my meat served on a plate, I don’t want to see the gory shit that happens before it gets there! But sometimes we DO need to see the gory shit. I recommend you watch Cannibal Holocaust if you’ve so far shied away, and do the film a favour and watch it on Blu-ray.

I’ve always been a fan of the score by Riz Ortolani. What did you think of it?

As said, I agree with the OP the movie is "pretty good" while it's disturbing.
Stunning cinematography, great soundtrack.
For me the movie shows in a very rough way the essence of human nature.

I disagree about animal cruelty.
Except the coati...the deaths of the snake and spider weren't necessary either.
But the others were 'normal' butchering for eating.

Do you know if that executed woman at the beginning is the same later impaled?

reply

I do not recall but I will be looking during any future viewings.

reply

That would be fine. ☺
Soooo, predator feeding didn't help. 🐈‍⬛ 🐈‍⬛ 🐈‍⬛
This movie will haunt me for a while.

The music is fantastic!
Signore Ortolani is betimes ironic or does he want to soothe our minds?
The intro (flight over the jungle with his music) could fit to a romantic comedy.
Well, nobody expects a romance by that title.
Even the incidental nice music with the gore is amazing.
Nearly said 'lighthearted' but that's not true, doesn't fit.
Hmmmm...perhaps need to watch and listen again to make up my mind.

Btw. MovieChat says it's created 1985 but everywhere else it's 1980.
Anyhow, just wave between 8-9/10 and think it'll become 9/10 for that impact.
And for the music. 🎼

It certainly does deserve a high rating. The trick to shoot the impalement scene was absolutely great. It gets extra points for all the legal trouble that Deodato got into after the film’s release.

reply

Yes, the impaled native woman looked horribly real.
Did read somewhere that this was supposed to be staged by the evil film crew also, after they gang-raped her. Means, the film crew killed her, not the native tribe. Which explains Alan's triumphant grin, who only feigns shock after the cameraman calls him out. ☻

Therefore the ritually executed woman at the beginning of Prof. Monroe's expedition cannot be the impaled woman either. The executed woman is white (difficult to see in the mud).

Nothing is random and there's certainly more to discover.
E.g. in 'civilized' New York, Monroe only smokes his pipe, while in the jungle almost exclusively cigarettes. Realized it when rewatched it.
But had enough of blood and gore now for a while.

For the film with its excellent soundtrack a solid 9/10 from me.

I was just about to ask this but saw your comment -- my friend and I just watched it tonight, and that was our impression, that the film crew had impaled the native woman after raping her, but were just pretending that it had been done by the tribe.

Also, the woman toward the beginning who was raped and killed and put onto the boat: I noticed that she appeared white, so we just assumed that it was the girl from the film crew. But then after seeing her death on the found footage, I'm now confused as to whom the first girl was. Any chance you're able to clarify that?

Also, I hated that the turtle kept moving around for so long into the butchering process :(

reply

The white woman who was ritually killed and put back in the boat at about min 20 cannot be the woman from the film crew.
The film crew woman was raped and beheaded by the native group in the forest (they held her head up).
So in my understanding there were three women.

reply

Oh, I know it wasn't the film crew woman, I just wasn't sure if it was ever clarified who it actually was. It just seemed odd that there was another white woman out there that nobody had mentioned.

reply

I really liked the score too.

reply

I agree. I thought it was pretty good with some artistic merit, a 7/10.
