I didn't find it scary in the slightest. It was very graphic as you say, but not scary, not at all. I was laughing my ass off at the beginning when the natives are being shot at and the quite obvious staging. Not to mention there are no bullet holes in their bodies when they are shot, also the natives attacking people with those hatchets and quite obviously pulling punches when they attempt to strike a blow.
It also found it quite convenient during the second half of the film that the camera was always pointing the other way when something happens, like the spider on Faye and the snake in Felipe's boot, at least it gave the stage hand some time to get out of the frame.
Don't put the devil in the picture, cause' the religious groups won't wanna see it.
