Kilgore vs Kurtz

The reason given to Willard for his mission to terminate Colonel Kurtz is that he has gone insane. He probably was, but he was winning against the Viet Cong, albeit on his terms. As Williard reads in his dossier, they(the VC) were afraid of him. Colonel Kilgore on the other hand is also mad. His attack on Viet Cong and his fixation on surfing, especially surfer Lance showed that he was not also not fit for command. In the Redux version, his surfboard is stolen by Willard and Kilgore uses his chopper to appeal for its return! The horror!

The difference was Kilgore was willing to put on the facade that he was fighting the war in a civilized manner. Kurtz was tired of the bullshit, he knew that they were all savages and if they are going to act like savages they might as well look like savages
