Hopper was bad in this
A stoned actor not knowing his lines, even Coppola was annoyed by him. Could have been a great part.

shareI think Coppola was equally annoyed by Brando.
shareI thought Hopper was great, he’s a burned out gonzo journalist who’s lost his mind in the jungle, and he plays it perfectly.
One of the best performances of his career.
I agree. I’ve always thought he nailed it.
sharedefinitely, one of the roles he was absolutely born to play.
I think the best performance in the film came from the actor who played Chef (Frederick Forrest?) he’s usually overlooked because people focus on Duvall, Sheen and Brando but I thought he was incredible.
His overacting takes me out of the movie. But I can see why his approach to the role works for some people.
