Hopper was bad in this

A stoned actor not knowing his lines, even Coppola was annoyed by him. Could have been a great part.

reply

I think Coppola was equally annoyed by Brando.

reply

I thought Hopper was great, he’s a burned out gonzo journalist who’s lost his mind in the jungle, and he plays it perfectly.

One of the best performances of his career.

reply

I agree. I’ve always thought he nailed it.

reply

definitely, one of the roles he was absolutely born to play.

I think the best performance in the film came from the actor who played Chef (Frederick Forrest?) he’s usually overlooked because people focus on Duvall, Sheen and Brando but I thought he was incredible.

reply

Never get off the boat.

reply

That’s chief lol, I meant the guy with the moustache who gets chased by the tiger and meets an unfortunate end at the hands of Brando’s character.

reply

Right, but remember after the tiger incident Willard’s narration declares “never get off the boat.”

reply

His overacting takes me out of the movie. But I can see why his approach to the role works for some people.

"When it dies, he dies..."
