Why Did Kurtz's Troops Accept Lance?

First of all, what a great movie! I've seen it many times and it will always be one of my favorites.

It almost seemed like they accepted him as one of their own. It's talked about in this article, but I would like to get some thoughts from people here who have seen the movie as well.

Lance wasn't really a soldier he was a hippie surfer who loved nature. He fit right in.

Fit into what? They were basically a renegade army who only took orders from Kurtz. Lances character would have shunned that ideal.

Because he was just as f-cked as they were ? 🤣🤣

Only realised recently he’s the same guy who plays the kid in Outlaw Josey Wales, he was terrible in that film but he was brilliant in Apocalypse Now, had that vacant, strung out hippie persona down to a T.
