Months before this was released it was played out for real in Guyana

So many parallels between Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness and the Jonestown Massacre... Kurtz came to life in the person of Reverend Jim Jones.

reply

I don't see a parallel and I doubt Jim Jones tortured animals and destroyed acres of forest like they did in this piece of shit film.

reply

Wow... You're basically implying that you think Jim Jones, who was responsible for the deaths of nearly a thousand people, was a better person than Francis Ford Coppola.

As far as parallels, in each one we have a respected American leader who goes into the jungle and goes rogue, establishing his own kingdom far away from any authority, where he abused his power and commits atrocities and is worshiped as a god by his people. Willard also has a parallel in Congressman Leo Ryan, who went to Jonestown to investigate the reports of Jim Jones' cruelty and control over the people living there.

reply

I didn't say that.

reply

Reading between the lines of your statement, it's easy to come to that conclusion. You stated that Jim Jones did not do something awful that you imply the maker of Apocalypse Now did. You made no qualifying statement to the effect that "Jim Jones was a horrible person, but at least..." You just basically defended Jim Jones and implied he was better than Coppola.

reply

no, your thread is fucking stupid, jim jones killed a lot of people, he didn't destroy nature and torture animals like coppola did while shooting a piece of shit film.

reply

"a piece of shit film."

I stopped taking you seriously after that. You don't know shit about movies.

reply

I know way more than you.

reply

Well in either case, saying Apocalypse Now is a shit movie doesn't point out in this direction.

To appreciate AN for what it is you need to realise that it is a satire. Once you understand that, you have an unique piece of cinema with amazing cinematography, acting, dialogues, directing and the pacing is absolutely wonderful.

I can't figure how in the hell would anyone call this movie shitty. Even if you didn't like it, you need to realise that it still is a masterpiece (or at least a movie with a lot of potential).

reply

The pacing is far from wonderful, and now film or work of art is a justifiable reason to destroy nature or torture animals, so this film will always be a piece of shit just for that.

reply

Omg return watch Dennis the Menace or the 95764th Fast and Furious, they didn't hurt any nature or animals in the making of those.

Apocalypse Now is like wine, you need to understand what a good movie is to appreciate it, dumbass.

reply

you are the only dumbass, condoning animal torture.

reply

Haha seriously rofl. I don't fucking condone it, I'm actually an animal lover. But, animals kill each others everyday just like humans kill animals and eachothers everyday. Of course this is not okay, but will this stop me from appreciating a movie for what it is?? Hell, no.

And I'm pretty sure you are devoted to play the hater here but if you ignored this aspect of the production, you wouldn't go and call this movie trash (or shit, whatever).

So... If by ignoring something your opinion would be different, well it's not the movie that is the problem, it's what surrounds it.

Three people died on the set of The Twilight Zone, animals were killed on screen in Cannibal Holocaust. Are thos things hortible? Yes, they are. But these movies still stand for their value and what they brought to the movie industry.

But then I'm sure I just wasted my time once again writing this because you sound like a narrow minded fella.

reply

I said that no work of art, no matter how grand, justifies the destruction of animals and nature. So no matter how good a film it is, it's invalid, because it tortured animals.

reply

Martin Sheen suffered a heart attack during filming, where's your uproar over that?

Besides how many animals have been slaughtered for dumber reasons?

reply

Still not a word about Coppola filling the coffers of the Philippine military under the oppressive rule of Ferdinand Marcos. By all means, the rights of a water buffalo take precedence over human beings.

reply

Yeah I agree. There are quite a few similarities between AN and the Jonestown massacre now that I think of it. I remember watching a doco about it in 2007 and being struck by how much Jim Jones and Col. Kurtz went mad with power and tried to play God.
