Coppolla was a huge fan of Harrison Ford and if my movie trivia serves me correctly i think he was one of the many "shortlisted" for the role of Willard however he could not commit to the heavy filming schedule as he was already contracted for the role of Hans Solo in "Star Wars" (remember they started filming in 1975!) So Coppola gave him a smaller role
