which version should I watch?

about to watch this movie soon. Should I watch the shorter version or longer version?

reply

Watch the original 1979 shorter version... if you like it, then you can watch the longer redux as well, and decide for yourself which one is better.

The theatrical cut (shorter version).

reply

Do not watch the redux, it changes the way you see the characters permanently. I made the mistake of watching the redux first, and no matter how many times I watch the original I can't shake the impression left on me by the redux, which is not a good thing.

Redux makes Willard seem more clownish (stealing the surf board for no reason) and less rational (giving away fuel for the Bunnies) than necessary, but which other characters are altered in any noteable way?

Kilgore comes across as some surfing crazed weirdo rather than a badass. There's a few other minor changes, but Willard and Kilgore are the two I was referring to.

I know this reply is way too late, but nonetheless. I've only watched the theatrical cut. I thought the movie was good, but not a masterpiece as anyone says it is. I am looking forward though in seeing the director's cut. I'm probably gonna be seeing that near the beginning of the new year.

Both cuts are director's cuts. Coppola just decided to recut it many years after its original release. The Redux a very different movie, with emphasis on character and place rather than the focus on moral and ethical questions that we find in the original.

reply

Yeah, I ment the redux. I've got the special blu ray set which has both versions. I was mixed up for a second. Thanks for clearing that out.

Here's the set btw.

If you're watching it for the first time you have to begin with the theatrical cut. There is a reason that cut was the definitive version that became a classic. It's a lot to take in and I believe Apocalypse Now is an utterly unique and unprecedented film - it is surreal but simultaneously palpable, like being in a nightmare with your eyes wide open. But the original theatrical cut is more watchable. That version can be watched as a stylized war film. Redux cannot! Redux is a complete and deep experience that takes the viewer through a long and protracted depiction of hell. Redux can't simply be mistaken for a war film because it's much more literary, wordy, complex, tangential and psychologically wrenching (i.e. Willard is not as determined, but confused and questioning of his own journey in Redux).

if this film matters to you then you need to watch it a few more times and learn to make it familiar. This isn't a casual piece of popcorn entertainment that you just walk away from. Once you've personalized the film to your own understanding and familiarity you can then go on to watch Redux which is like an expanded version of the same. You will question why some things are so different and divergent in Redux but after you've sat through it and possibly watched it more than once it takes on it's own shape. You can't watch Redux and simply go back to the more streamlined original cut.

Redux is practically a totally different film watching experience and it's far too difficult to sit through as a first viewing. It demands way more commitment from the viewer. If you become a fan of Apocalypse Now then Redux turns into an absolutely fascinating new way of watching that movie you knew so well. It's amazing to see what was removed in 1979 and also amazing to see how much it changes everything. Redux is a complete descent into the hell that the original cut only introduces you to. You can't jump into the hard drugs until you've gone through the milder gateway drugs.

Bloody well said.

AN original is like the story from the captain of the boat's pov,and Redux is like finding and reading Willard's manuscripts found after the fact.

reply

Definitely the original, the Redux doesn't add much to the film and it can get very tedious. However if you are really in the mood and you are curious go ahead and give the Redux a shot although I would watch the original several times beforehand.
