Father DElay should have whacked the priest
When Father Delaney is being shouted at by the priest, I would have replied 'Fine, you come with me to the house, you didn't witness it you ass so instead of shouting at me, come prove me wrong'

shareExactly what I was thinking too.
I kinda took it that it wasn't a matter of convincing the 'unbelieving' priest. Rather, he just didn't want the publicity; not necessarily that they didn't believe the story. The other priest there even made a comment about this being 'medieval.' They dismissed it all as nonsense but deep down they may have feared it may be true, but had no answers on how to combat the evil. So instead of taking a look for himself, which perhaps he really didn't want to do, it was easier to 'cover up' and pretend it wasn't happening. Father Delaney even said 'Oh I see.....is that the fashion these days? To cover up?' That line really stuck out to me, given the Catholic Church's cover-up struggles with pedophile priests that hit the fan years later.
In other words, he obviously didn't want to investigate for himself. The reason he gave - that it was all nonsense - may or may not be the real reason. People often give a false reason for something they do or say, e.g. 'white lies.'
And then to add an exclamation point, he suggested at the end that Father Delaney 'needs a vacation' - meaning, 'we are going to get rid of you so that you don't continue to talk about this.' It sounded like they wanted no part of it, true or not.
Delaney was the one doing the shouting all through the movie. I would've slapped him.
