Eerily Prophetic

Wow. This movie was eerily prophetic. It's almost like the makers have a crystal ball or something!

I know - these days I find myself recalling certain scenes from the movie. The sitcom with Harvey Korman as a cross-dressing father. This film should be better known.

Here's a list of some the stuff this movie got right:

Chet Roosevelt prefigures both Bill Clinton with the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal and George W. Bush riding his dad's coattails into the oval office.
Native Americans amassing a substantial amount of wealth and reclaiming the country back. This basically happened with Native Americans in the gaming industry with all the casinos they own and operate.
Harvey Korman's cross-dressing sitcom character predicts both the huge success of Mrs. Doubtfire and Bruce Jenner turning into Caitlyn Jenner. Plus Korman's pill addiction is an accurate prediction of manic depressives getting hooked on Prozac in the 1990's.
Meatloaf versus the car is the sort of thing one can easily imagine happening on TV shows like Jackass.
Zane Buzby's puke rock act reminds me of Lady Gaga's more outrageous "look at me!" attention-seeking stunts (meat dress, anyone?).
Jay Leno versus his mom in a boxing match. Watch a lot of these trash talk shows and family members are always getting physical and/or having fierce shouting matches on these shows.
The collapse of the Soviet Union.
The American dollar losing a substantial amount of its value.
Smoking being outlawed.

Yes! Thank you for that. The whole game show/reality show/trash TV ethos that's pervaded popular culture and even the news business. I haven't seen Americathon since it was in theatres. I wish the DVD was available. I'd even watch a VHS.

reply

Americanthon is now available as an MOD DVD-R from Warner Archive. It can be ordered off of Amazon at a reasonable price.

Replace the Native Americans with the Chinese, and it would be even closer to our current reality.
