Angelique and the very end of the film (SPOILERS****)

*****SPOILERS*****

Towards the end Angelique starting removing a lot of her white costume, and at the very end it looked like she and Joe were about to merge. What's the story on that? Was is a spirit merge thing, since I assume he was dead?

reply

Angelique is Death. her getting closer and closer to him physically represents death getting closer and closer to him.

reply

Death, it would appear, was his one true love- to whom he had always been faithful.

I don't need you to tell me how good my coffee is. .

reply

Since I read that she was supposed to represent Bob Fosses first wife who died, I have read it as the angel of his first wife coming down to reexamine his life and take him to the afterlife. I suppose this all happens while he is battling for his life while they operate on him.

reply

The whole movie was a flashback. He was already dead from minute one of the film. What the last scene shows is his transition into death and meeting Angelique. During the film every time Gideon had brushes with death (shortness of breath, chest pains etc) they'd show a quick flash of the angel.

reply

Disagree. She is the Angel of Death, Gideon is 'flirting with'. It is not a flashback where he is meeting her. She is actually helping him get makeup and costumed for his "Bye Bye Life" number (ie, his death).

You just have to be resigned-
You're crashing by design

How's this for flirting?

Paraphrasing Fosse to the Angel of Death:

Every single day I’ve F’d around on my wife or girlfriend (or both), I drink too much, smoke too much, pop too many pills. I’m a workaholic, who lies every chance I get. NOT very attractive, huh?

Death: Quite the contrary.

reply

Two words... embracing Death.

reply

Angelique is death.

He's been flirting with her throughout his life considering his lifestyle.

The entire film goes through the stages of grief the comedian lists at the beginning.

By the end, he has reached acceptance and goes into the arms of death.

Joe's entire life he's been a womanizer so it's not unusual he would envision death as a beautiful woman or that he would finally embrace her as a lover.
