are we supposed to think Dee Wallace is average looking?

She seemed to be sort of an extra character, there to appreciate Dudley Moore's music, and to pad out the time a little... but, she's beautiful! I'm not sure I understand what they were shooting for, with her character.

You are toast, my toasty friend.

Yes. I think casting screwed up. Bo Derek is a 10, but she was 8 or 9 at least. This threw me off also.

This sort of thing seemed to happen more in older films (casting average people as supposedly beautiful, and vice versa). Nowadays they have become better at it.
(I wonder if professional casters use a scale too...?)

The Dee Wallace character is to show that Dudley Moore is not nearly as lonely as he thinks he is--in other words, his mid-life crisis is phoney, and he got away from Julie Andrews for no good reason. His attraction to Bo Derek is merely another part of that false mid-life crisis.

His statement, "Oh, Sam, come save me," shows that he understands he has made some bad moves.

The fact is, that he not really starved for either a young woman--Jenny--or an older woman--Mary.

His is the mistake that most guys who go through midlife crises make. Eventually, the guy wants to come home. But much of the time, it's too late.

Not at all. We're supposed to think that her character thinks that she is only average looking. It's all about how the character feels about herself.

I never really considered why this character is in the story. I guess she shows that George is not just out to screw anyone and gives him a chance to be kind to someone - thus showing he is not a complete *beep* Of course, shortly but there after he goes knocking on Bo Derek's door.

That's a little funny - when typing my comment above I used a slightly rude word to describe George's character but it was automatically changed to *beep*. I don't know if it's the app on my tablet or IMDB policy but shall have to experiment and see how many rude words get past the censor - where ever it is.
This could get a little vulgar but here goes *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep*

I just saw this movie last night, and overall thought it was very funny and surprisingly insightful. But Dee Wallace's character...man. That was just weird. Not so much because she was so pathetic, but because - what purpose did her character serve the narrative at all? Other than to show that men can have performance issues - but it was so weird that she blamed herself, and assumed that it was somehow because something was wrong with her. Considering the amount he smoked AND DRANK, it would have been more surprising if he HAD been able to "perform".

I don't think she was cast for a specific attractiveness. She was just another woman(like Sam) that George was ultimately not attracted to because she wasn't unattainable. Mid-life crisis etc.
